as my wife and i are planning to extend our family, are there any complications in having to extend holiday stay due to unforseen circumstances?eg. uncomfortable pregnancy, too close to birth date, actually giving birth etc etc. Confused Razz

Some foreigners go to NZ to give birth bec. lets the baby become a Kiwi. However, concerns were raised about actually giving birth in NZ. Please read the article on the link below....

Hi

The article was very pertinent as from Sept 03 they have changed a lot of the rules re payments when having a baby in NZ. Basically, it said that if your work visa is for over 2 years then you are entitled to the same healthcare provision as those with permanent residency or NZ citizens. But, if work visa is only 2yrs or less, or visitors/holiday visa then only initial emergency treatment is provided and that any other treatments needed will have to be paid for and encourage comprehensive insurance to cover it.
The Govt have finally realised that a lot of folk went to NZ just to deliver and improve their claim on residency etc so have closed the loophole.

I was aware of people on 1 or 2 year visa having to pay for maternity scans, appts etc etc and run up a bill....

I am currently pregnant with twins and will be giving birth in NZ hence I have researched this subject and made sure of getting a longterm work visa until EOI pulled so that I am covered for possible costs incurred. As I am likely to need an elective C section - dread to think how many $$$$ that would be?????

I do still have previous-said article if any usse to you

Cheers
Ruth
