Hi Susan and Welcome!
Here's some health care info (things you probably already knew ) plus a couple of health insurance websites...
The Immigration Service have the following on their site:
| Quote: | | Comprehensive life-long medical care is free to everyone. All essential health care is provided free through the public health system. This means that while some routine services, such as visits to local doctors and dentists, have to be paid for, more costly services, such as hospital treatment are, with minor exceptions, available free to all residents. |
This is a helpful link:
http://www.immigration.govt.nz/NR/rdonlyres/03EEF6D5-C06D-45C6-8FDC-7DF41798F834/0/IMM272802health.pdf
Health insurance qualifications can be found here:

| Quote: | | This is not to say that there is no place for private health care. Although accidents such as leg-breaks are treated immediately, there can be painfully long waiting-lists for many treatments that are considered 'non-urgent'. |
Here's a couple of private health care provider websites:
http://www.southerncross.co.nz/
http://www.uni-care.org/index.html
For a current report on health insurance go to:
http://www.consumer.org.nz
This is info previously published here (thanks to all of our mates ), but it's nice to have it all in one place.
Also, here's another thread regarding nurse's salaries:
http://emigratenz.org/community/viewtopic.php?t=119&highlight=salary
Generally if you do a "key word" search (click on the link at the top of the page) you can usually find something about what you're looking for...but if not, don't be afraid to ask!
Best of luck in your new journey! |

About 1/3 of kiwis have health insurance, the majority opting for surgical care cover only. Some subscribe to the ambulance service as it costs $50 for each ambulance trip otherwise (aothough even members get letters asking for this as a 'donation')
GP visits are not too pricey, although they can be included in certain insurances.
Money saving tip! - The OOH centre where I work charges $15 extra to see patients registered with doctors who are not members of the centre (they do a lot of the shifts you see) so it can pay to ensure you register with a doctor who provides 24 hour care themselves or is a member of a suitable organisation.
