Can anyone make a suggestion on the best way to emigrate My husband and I (29 and 39) want to open a hostel in NZ. We have a potential partner who is a friend and NZ citizen, but not enough money to buy a property outright. I am a social services manager with a nursing qualification (lapsed) and masters in Psychology. He is an industrial designer.
I was hoping we could go over on a LTB visa, one of us could run the hostel, and the other person work at first. Is it better to get a work visa and then start a business once there, or go for the business first? I have run a hostel voluntarity in the states for a year, but neither of us have owned our own businesses. I worked in NZ for a few months in 2001 (got a work visa and permit after going there on holiday).
grateful for any help! |

Hi Juniper,
We're in the same situation as you - we have been planning on going over through the Skilled Migrants Category, but after talking to a few people, they seem to think we should go over and start up a web design company (as I've been running here for the past 18 months).
However, we've already got our working holiday visas which allows us to go to NZ for a year and look for work. Our plan is to find a job, get a work permit and then apply for PR through the SMC when the points drop a bit. But now the LTBV has been suggested I'm really confused!
My initial thoughts on our situation are it will be easier to apply through the SMC and gain residency within a few months once the points drop to our level (150 - 160 ish), rather than have to go over on a LTBV and work over there for 2 years and then apply through the Entrepreneur category for residence. (The LTBV is only a work permit, not a grant of residency isn't it?) And who's to say that the business will qualify as being "a suitable addition to the NZ economy" and them granting residence then?
I'm a little confused now!
Sorry if I've confused you even more! (That's what happens when you type as you think! )
Jodie
