Hi Everybody
This is the first time I have posted and I must say it is a marvellous site with some very friendly people posting.
My wife and I ( and 3 year old Son ) have recently returned from a holiday in New Zealand and loved the place. The purpose was to have a look at the country with a view to emigrating. We are now decided we are going to sell up and go next year.
I have done a lot of research into the process and I think I understand it.
I am 34 years old and a Carpenter and Joiner by trade but have since moved into AutoCAD design and Production management. I think if I went to New Zealand I would have to go back to doing Carpentry to get enough points to be successful in the EOI. I think if I went into Production Management I wouldn't be able to claim my points for being a Joiner ????? Can anyone shed any light on this ??
Also does anyone know what is required as evidence of work experience ? I have worked for the same building group for 16 years and if I need to get a letter from Human Resources things may get awkward if you know what I mean. Will a letter from my manager suffice ? also one final one how do I get my qualifications assessed for the New Zealand immigration process. Thanks for reading and I hope somebody may be able to help. |

Hello and welcome to the forum
You will definately get work as a carpenter in NZ at the moment, they are desperate for most tradespeople, i'm not sure about your other line of work, so sorry can't help on that. i think you can only claim points for the Carpentry though so you would have to do work in this field at least until you gain residency, that's my understanding at least
Good luck

In the emigrate job section, there is an ad for builders.
They are also offering paid accom and flights if you stay for a min of 3 mths.
They advertised it on the radio here..might be worth emailing them (Viv is the lady who we spoke to on the phone)

Welcome
Work experience is causing me a few headaches at the moment. My employers are fine about it but having problems proving work experience from years ago to get the points for years. I have some letters but have been told that wage slips are also acceptable to support your claim.
You cannot start too soon to get all the paperwork together

Don't rise to Moorf's bait.... by her own admission she's a woman obsessed!
Are you a North, West or South Yorkie?
PS Love your chocolate bars....well someone had to say it! |

Hi Yorkie & welcome to the forum.
I'm in a similar situation to you. I've just turned 50 and took my carpentry apprenticeship at the age of 16, so I have 34 years experience as a chippie. About 12 years ago, I did my first job as a working foreman, and from then until the present, have been a site manager, mainly in commercial refurb & fit-out.
Pam (my partner & wife to be on Aug 27th!) visited my Sister in NZ last year, and like you, fell in love with the country We didn't start looking at the possibles/variables etc. until about Feb/March this year, when I also happened to stumble upon this marvelous forum We have learned so much from it as I'm sure you will.
I realise that, as my qualifications only cover me for carpentry, I would have to go back "on the tools" as it were. But, hey, what's the big deal if it meant we could get PR to live in NZ?
I've had lots of positive feedback from construction companies and agencies. I will be contacting them just before we intend visiting again, hopefully mid/late next year. Oh, you dont need to get you quals. assessed as such, just show them your apprenticeship papers.
Hope to have been of some help.
Good luck in your venture

Thanks everyone for your help and advice. It is good to know that there is work in Carpentry and i'm going to follow up the leads some of you have given me.
I'm a North Yorkie Karltsmith live in York about 5 minutes from the Yorkie factory !! ( hopefully not for much longer ).
Going to take your advice Michelle and start getting the paperwork sorted.
BillB your dead right what does it matter if you have to go back on the tools for a short while.

Hi Yorkie
You need to send your certificates to NZQA to have them assessed. From what I can remember you will also need to send proof of your work experience too. And of course you have to pay. (cant remember how much though sorry)
My hubby is a welder, who became interested in AutoCad whilst over here. More as a way to "get off the Tools", as well as an interest (and talent) in drawing design. He is mainly self taught, and has been looking into it over in NZ. You may be interested to know that they really are at the begining of things over there. The tech in hubbys firm is also self taught, and hubby recently tried to enroll on a collage course, but it had been cancelled due to lack of interest. So, although you may have to use carpentry to get PM, you will be able to go down the AutoCad route should you want to. |

Hi Rodders
Initially we were looking at Auckland but we are looking at other areas. We intend to fly out in November to try and have a good look round. To be honest I aren't too fussed where we end up initially. |

Thanks Michelle for the advice. Have you managed to get your work experience evidence sorted out ? I have hopefully persuaded a HR Manager to write me a letter.
I notice you live in Leeds not far from myself in York anyway good luck ! |
