Hi Everybody..........................
I have done a lot of research into the process and I think I understand it.
I am 34 years old and a Carpenter and Joiner by trade but have since moved into AutoCAD design and Production management. I think if I went to New Zealand I would have to go back to doing Carpentry to get enough points to be successful in the EOI..........................
also one final one how do I get my qualifications assessed for the New Zealand immigration process. Thanks for reading and I hope somebody may be able to help. fingers crossed

Hi Yorkie & welcome to the forum. Clapping
I'm in a similar situation to you. I've just turned 50 and took my carpentry apprenticeship at the age of 16, so I have 34 years experience as a chippie. About 12 years ago, I did my first job as a working foreman, and from then until the present, have been a site manager, mainly in commercial refurb & fit-out.

Pam (my partner & wife to be on Aug 27th!) visited my Sister in NZ last year, and like you, fell in love with the country Yes We didn't start looking at the possibles/variables etc. until about Feb/March this year, when I also happened to stumble upon this marvelous forum Nice One We have learned so much from it as I'm sure you will.

I realise that, as my qualifications only cover me for carpentry, I would have to go back "on the tools" as it were. But, hey, what's the big deal if it meant we could get PR to live in NZ? Razz Razz Razz

I've had lots of positive feedback from construction companies and agencies. I will be contacting them just before we intend visiting again, hopefully mid/late next year. Oh, you dont need to get you quals. assessed as such, just show them your apprenticeship papers.

Hope to have been of some help.
Good luck in your venture fingers crossed

Hi Bill
Congratulations on your forthcoming wedding.
Thanks for the advice. I suppose I will have to go back on the tools but it's a means to an end.
There seems to be work over in NZ for chippies so hopefully getting fixed up won't be a problem.

Hi Yorkie

You need to send your certificates to NZQA to have them assessed. From what I can remember you will also need to send proof of your work experience too. And of course you have to pay. (cant remember how much though sorry)

My hubby is a welder, who became interested in AutoCad whilst over here. More as a way to "get off the Tools", as well as an interest (and talent) in drawing design. He is mainly self taught, and has been looking into it over in NZ. You may be interested to know that they really are at the begining of things over there. The tech in hubbys firm is also self taught, and hubby recently tried to enroll on a collage course, but it had been cancelled due to lack of interest. So, although you may have to use carpentry to get PM, you will be able to go down the AutoCad route should you want to.

Hi Wilson
Thanks for the advice. It has really surprised me that the AutoCad is in it's infancy. It is good to know really because hopefully with the experience and qualifications I have( City and Guilds 2D and 3D ) it may be easier to get work. Is your Hubby still welding ? Whereabouts in NZ are you living ? Do you both like it ?

Here is the ad. On the forums first page, under employment opportunities.

Viv is the lady you address the email to. She told us on the phone when we (hubby) rang her, that they will pay for flights and accomm if you stay 3 mths. They need commercial builders preferably (a mate from the UK has applied, he was going to go to oz, so will see if he gets it)

Hi Yorkie

No luck with my past employers, they refused to do anything to say I had worked for them. Like you I have managed to get somebody I worked with to do a letter. One thing I have learnt is to never throw anything away. Oh and I started trying to get a letter from them 6 months ago, made 14 phone calls one day last week ahhhhhhhh.

There are quite a few of us from this area, Leeds, Barnsley, Sheffield etc.

That's a pain. I can't understand why they would they refuse though. Surely it's no skin off their noses?

Employers are only obliged to keep records for 7 years and it goes back nearly 20. Even the tax office dont keep records for that long.

Have got a letter this morning form my manager who fortuanately still works there so hopefully this will be enough.

Hi Yorkie

We are in Christchurch, allthough at the moment I am over here sorting things out. At the time we went over the points were still too high for us to apply for pr, and also without a job offer we were way low on the points front. Thats why we decided to bite the bullet and go over for a visit. So, at the moment he is welding, cause that is how we will get our pr, but he is deffinetly looking to get into AutoCAD, one way or other.!!!

However, although his job is basically the same over there as it was over here, it is a different work ethic over there. Our experience has been that the bosses are happy to reward for a job well done, something that he has not experienced over here for a long time.

Best of Luck
