HI To all!
After spending a couple weeks in NZ for our honeymoon early this year. My wife and I fell in love with the place and decided we should try to lodge an application for immigration.
Recent updates on the new point system gave us a favorable chance. As of the moment, I am trying to look for job offer opportunities in the web. However, most of the job openings that I qualify for require citizens or have work permits.
I'd like to ask if anyone here knew any company or firms that gives JO to qualified people outside of NZ?
During our stay, I did not bother to look for one for we were enjoying every moment of our stay.
Is it advisable to come to NZ on a holiday scheme again and get a Work permit while there?
I knew you have a bigger chance of getting a PR if you are already in NZ and have a job.
I am in IT bythe way and I think I fall in one from the shortage list.
thank you! |

Hi Arlevein,
A little known fact that might help you is that if you are able to secure a job with an NZIS approved employer you can join the work to residence scheme. Approved employers do not have to jump through the same hoops as non-accredited employers and furthermore are more disposed to employing from overseas. Follow this link for a list of approved employers. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/NR/rdonlyres/3970927D-5E43-4A2E-A71F-E7CC65BAEBC0/0/AccreditationWebsitelistings.pdf . If you are in IT this helps a lot. I know that there are a number of specialist IT recruitment agencies in NZ. Check out the yellow pages!
Hope this helps!

I saw some very promising job openings to which I could say that I do qualify. However I am stuck in two questions:
- In my cover letter, do I have to say that I do not have a working permit and given the offer I could get one?
- Some post that did not indicate it is only open for NZ residents and those who have permits, should I readily presume that its open for my status?
I could really need an advice here from folks who already had experience on this. |

Hi all,
After reading Arlevien's message, I have the same doubt also. See, some job openings required the candidates to be either a NZ citizen/PR, or have a valid work permit /work visa, but according to my understanding, without a job offer, it's very difficult to apply for a job permit/visa with NZIS right? A few questions here:
1. What is the different between a work visa and work permit in layman term? I always seem to confuse between these 2
2. Which is the best way to do: to apply for a work visa/work permit first, then only go to NZ, OR to get into NZ first, and hope to find a job abd proceed from there?
3. I am a 26 yr programmer, has been working for 5 years. I have a MCSD.Net certification in C#. Other skill sets include VB, COM+, SQL 2000, ASP.Net. Can I get a job with those skill sets in NZ? and what will the pay I should expect?
Thanks a lot. |

Hi Colin.
With regard to entry to NZ from UK, we understand that you cannot get past the immigation official in Auckland Airport (or perhaps even the airline official in a UK airport) unless you have one of the following documents.
1, A return ticket. ( or an onward ticket to another country to which you have right of entry.) UK citizens can stay in NZ for up to 6 months as a tourist but will not be able to work legally.
2, A Visa. ( Either work visa ,valid for the duration of your contract or usually 2 years; student visa for the duration of your course or 2yrs; or visitor visa for 9 months) A Visa is issued to you when you are outside NZ and is converted to a permit by the immigration official when you arrive in NZ.
3, Proof that you have been granted residence (Which you can't actually apply for at present)
Hope this helps

I know I'm not in IT but I found no difficulty getting a job.
A tentative enquiry to a specialist agency resulted in 3 serious and 2 curious job offers within a month of application. The three better offers were all pleased to wait 6 months until I could get a visa sorted, which m given that I had an offer was approved.
My only problem was that as I have a vocational degree, my residence cannot be approved until I am registered in NZ which required a separate work visa (sent by return of post!) but when I get registered on landing, I can then ask for residence to be completed.
I would suggest you approach an agency. They will be able to find a suitable employer and, as someone on the OSL you will get a work visa in no time. |

Thanks for your info wendy.
I am curious though, is there something called 'job search visa'? granted by NZIS? but i guess this is something similar to a 9-month duration visitor visa. And if I am not mistaken, we need to prove how will we finance ourself for the duration of stay in NZ right? |

Hi guys,
With the new policy in place, I believe it is a good move to get the services of an immigration agent. Could you pls recommend some agents?
Thanks a lot. |

A cheaper way to start a job search is to look in New Zealand Yellow Pages for firms in your field in the area you want and phone them up.
Ask them if they know of any vacancies or of any trade or professional journals (or web sites ) that advertise vacancies. We found that most people in NZ are quite happy to spare a few minutes for a chat and point you in the right direction.

Hi Martwend,
I've already tried making direct contact with NZ companies for possible employment however, they won't entertain you unless your already in New Zealand. I guess they are not willing to wait for so long until your migration papers are processed/approved. |
