Can anybody recommend a company/policy for house insurance? I have recently made a successful offer on a property here in Christchurch, and will need to organise insurance by settlement date.
Anything I need to keep in mind or watch out for when looking at policies here?
Cheers |

| I am with AMI. They seem ok but you never know until you have to claim do you! |

| Just realised you get a fairly big discount if you take car and home insurance together. I haven't shopped around much though. Might be worth asking whoever does your car insurance first... |

Hi,I am from Calfornia and we pay $650 U.S. per year. What do you pay yearly? Also when you reply what does the gas and electricity cost?
Thanks, Suzanne |

It is worth shopping around for insurance as prices vary considerably. Some companies have poor repuatations for paying claims though so you have to be very careful who you go with. One company (State) has recently included the percentage of claims paid out in its advertising in the hope of banishing this reputation, which, from the figures would seem to be totally undeserved. I have their cover and the insurance document is clearly worded and seems to include only fair exclusions. (IMHO!) It may be worth asking other companies how they pay out too (AMI have a good rep) and asking for a sample policy doc before taking out cover.
How much you pay will vary a lot depending on where you live, just as in the UK. In Sumner, Christchurch we pay $175 pa for $120K of contents cover. A colleague of mine in St Albans Ch Ch pays the same for $40K of cover although this is with AMI rather than State. Bear in mind that in the UK (and probably the US) a large part of your insurance costs for contents are third party liability cover which is not necessary in NZ due to the fact you can't be sued for personal injury here.
Gas is about 12c per KWH in bulk, about 14c in smaller cylinders.
Electricity costs about 19c daytime and 10.5c night in Ch Ch although prices vary widely across NZ. You can also get single rate meters ($70 to change) which charge about 15c per kwh regardless of time. These are best if you have no night storage heaters. |
