We are planning to go on a visitors visa in Feb 05, get a job and then apply for PR. We would rather not pay customs duty on importing our household goods so would have to wait for PR before importing. This means we could be without basic furniture for 6-12 months.

What have other people done in similar circumstnaces? Is most let property in NZ let furnished or unfurnished?

Any views etc gratefully received, as ever.

Hi Lee

Our experience is that most is unfurnished although they do include white goods so you get the washer, fridge cooker etc. We managed to buy a few basics off the previous tennents but had to go out and buy quite a bit new which was an added expense.

We looked at a lot of rental properties and only found 2 furnished, both very badly !

We basically did the same thing, and when hubby got the job we looked for furnished property. It is possible, but it is not easy. We wanted a two/three bed fully furnished for $240 to $260 per week. We went to the agencies, but the some of the places they showed us would not have been suitable for an animal, let alone a family. In the end we looked at the private ads in the paper, and found exactly what we were looking for; three beds, fully furnished (including towels, cutlery, basically everything) for $260 per week.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the responses - as expected, it ain't gonna be a picnic is it!

I can see my patience is going to be sorely tested over the next few months....

Wilson - where in NZ did you get your three bed furnished?
