| It says on the NZIS site that it is not against any law etc to look for work whilst in NZ - in fact, I think it went on to say that this is how many people find work! I think I posted the actual text around here somewhere |

Sorry to hear about your man's unfortunate experience. I think his experience is not a common one...I have travelled a fair bit and I normally pray this type of thing does not happen to me...never has.
My wife and I travelled through Auckland on different occasions without any problems...did fly AirNZ though. My wife was really impressed with the free coffee bar as you wait for your luggage and had a good chat with the folk serving the coffee...I think when she was done, her luggage was the last on the belt.
I am one of those folks who currently live in Canada...Toronto area. We moved here from South Africa 10 years ago. Vancouver is a great area...can be a bit rainy though, but then compared to the UK... |

Azazel, that is all very well, but don't you need a job offer first before they will give you a visa? and seeing as every company and agency all say "see you when you get here" how on earth do you get a job offer without going over? |
Its very true, check back to the Chicken and Egg thread (Chicken = job, Egg = Visa)
Rules are rules though, thats all I was saying about why the guy might have got uptight :) |

Is this happening at all other airports like Christchurch and Wellington.?
Then againmay be not, There very few direct flights to both Wellington or Christchurch.
Or there are a few of those officers reading this site?
I suppose having resumes and certs will get you into more trouble too

Hi All,
I think the thing here is to be careful what you say to immigration. If you say you are there to look for work there is a fair chance they will start to ask questions, after all a visitor is someone that intends to leave.
When we went over I simply said that we were visiting to have a look around because we were considering emigrating and wanted to make sure we were looking into the right areas etc. I had absolutely no problems with immigration at all. One event does not make a trend, these guys are human as well, perhaps he had a bad day!
I would also suggest that, if you are on a visitors "permit", producing loads of documents talking about interviews, EOI's etc just says "I don't intend to leave" to the immigration officer. Sure keep everything in your luggage but a visitor should appear as just that, otherwise questions are likely to be asked.
Cheers,
Mark. |

Shelly,
Do you think it could be because he is from Derbyshire only jokin.
Quick update with me while i`m here. Received job offer 2 weeks ago, we are now just waiting for this house to be sold. Police checks boxed off, medicals soon to be sorted. Can`t wait. Been in touch with employer and he has told me just to go with the flow , he understands our situation, all he asks is to be kept up to speed.
Know anybody in Derbyshire who wants to buy a house in Cheshire, never know you could earn a bit of commission

Why not post off any docs to a PO Box at your destination in advance so that you don't have to carry them through immigration?
We are sending all ours to our new address in Christchurch that Kiwi kindly arranged for us and we shall be backing up our laptops and removing all the info for the trip too...
Moi? Paranoid?
Well, after a friend of mine flew to Dallas to be a nanny (unofficial job with friends) and was turned back and put on next plane home due to an entry in her diary that they found for her arrival date which read "Start new job in America today"... hmmmmmm perhaps a little paranoid!! |

Hi all, just to clarify, hubby was only asked about his intentions in NZ once they had emptied all his luggage and obviously came across his documents! It is true he is from Derbyshire and quite possibly "Strong in thi arm, an thick in thi head!" but I wouldn't say he looked suspicious (but then I am biased )
Glad things are going well for you Kim, keeping our still for you, though I'm sure you won't need it (your not from Derbyshire! ) Sorry I can't help you out with any potential buyers although I am considering a website dedicated to intending migrants selling their properties on a "Sold subject to immigration approval" basis Not very up on IT though
An update on EOI we had "Selected" on our online application this morning although I don't know what the points were So all this hassle and now it doesn't matter about the job so much although we could do with the added security. Still it didn't say "Lost"
Moorf good idea about posting the documents on, lets just hope NZ post is better than ours |

With the Korean Air are coming in NZ most of the east europeans particularly from Czech Republic and Hungary...most of them backpakers which sooner or latter will try to find seasonal jobs across NZ for few months. To curb the fenomenon Korean Air officials are cheking for visas and money at the departure on the major airports in Europe (Pari, Frankfurt, Zurich)
Korean Air is offering some of the best deals for one year open return tikets to NZ...so they have many clients . |

Hi Sandra,
Yes, he managed to arrange both interviews although the first was not very pleasant and he said he felt very intimidated the second one is scheduled for later tonight our time so I should know more by the morning hopefully he should also have another one tonight and then one on Monday He's feeling abit down though and going over in their winter hasn't helped although they have gave the weather out to be alot better from today and improving alot from Tues! typically he flys back Wed night!) He made another reference to Canada this morning so I will just have to keep my I do like Canada, but I have to remember why New Zealand was our first choice and keep sight of that and I think he is rapidly losing sight of that How are things going for you? |

Thanks to markkellaway for the useful info about what to tell immigration
We're heading off to NZ next month (hopefully not to return) but were discussing whether to be upfront with immigration if they ask - we've been pulled out of the pool and are going through whatever process we now have to go through
After reading markkellaway's post we've decided to go with the visiting friends and touring story - it's mostly true anyway....
We're going via Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific so hopefully we won't have the same problems as Mr Robothamma. By the way with the house sale, we've just sold our house in Warrington after what seemed a nightmare - chain collapse at the exchange of contract stage.

Congrats on selling the house
We too are going with the "touring and visiting friends" story (and now we have so many friends out there from this forum we're not strictly lying!!)
Good Luck with the trip - when are you flying out?
