Susanlin: I do not appreciate your insinuation that parents who do not vaccinate are irresponsible. This is typical of the small-minded, unbending approach that some health professionals have, that turns parents off.
If vaccines cannot damage children then WHY is there a 'VACCINE DAMAGE PAYMENTS' at the department for work and pensions?!
http://www.dwp.gov.uk/lifeevent/benefits/vaccine_damage_payments.asp#what
From the page: "Can I get it? top of page
You may be able to get a Vaccine Damage Payment if you think you are severely disabled and your disability was caused by vaccination against any of these diseases:
* Diphtheria
* Tetanus
* Pertussis (Whooping cough)
* Poliomyelitis
* Measles
* Mumps
* Rubella (German measles)
* Tuberculosis (TB)
* Haemophilus Influenzae type b (HIB)
* Meningococcal group C (Meningitis C)
* Smallpox (up to 1st August 1971)
You may have received a combined vaccination against a number of the diseases listed. For example, DTP (diptheria, tetanus and pertussis) or MMR (measles, mumps and rubella).You may also be able to get a payment if:
* the disabled person is thought to be severely disabled because their mother was vaccinated against one of the diseases in the list while she was pregnant or
* they have been in close physical contact with someone who has been vaccinated against poliomyelitis with vaccine that was given orally."
Obviously, vaccines MUST be damaging some people, or else there wouldn't be a provision for payments!
I could give you endless links to prove my point, but I don't think it's appropriate for this forum. I also find it outrageous that you can dismiss EVERY SINGLE family who claim their child has been damaged by a vaccine!
I am very thankful for our doctor, who is open-minded and willing to listen to parents!
Now, I really don't want to debate this issue with you, because I don't appreciate your insinuations of irresponsibility, and scaremongering - then you go on to say you are not attacking anyone personally. What a laugh!
OK, stick a fork in me....I'm done here. |

Karl
I howled at your last post! I don't think those worms will get back in that can now! Vaccination always provokes strong debate and emotion. I feel I am on a personal crusade to inform people/patients/parents of the safety, efficacy and importance of vaccination!
I will certainly keep you informed on the Men B programme. It is starting in North Island very soon. The vaccine is called MeNZB - you will find info via search engine.

Hi Karl,
Thanks for your kind words, but I'm afraid this discussion has soured me to this board for a bit.
Nothing makes me more FURIOUS than the insinuations that have been made.
My child is the the most precious person in my life, he has taught me the meaning of true love. To have some complete stranger come in and throw accusations around makes me angry beyond belief.
So I'm outta here. |

OOOOh I do love worms, especially the canned variety!
This is especially good as Hep B is one of those illnesses associated with loose living and they always cause upset when mentioned!
Most people catch Hep B in one of four ways: Congenitally from their mothers (the main issue in children), IV drug abuse, sexual contact and a long way down the list comes other contact with infected blood, mostly in carers for those afflicted. Your risk is small if you do not fall into one of these categories.
I tend personally to side with those who follow advice as it is always given with the best interest of children in mind and only after considering dispassionately all the evidence available. No amount of internet or library research and gathered anecdotal evidence can compete with the wealth of information collated by the WHO and other organisiations before vaccination is advised. This advice is constantly reviewed in the light of new findings and all vaccination suspected adverse effects other than known minor problems are reported and centrally analysed to look for trends.
Thankfully we no longer need to rely on the lucky observer to come up with a chance finding and believe it or not, no government conspires to waste money on useless or harmful vaccination programmes.
Nobody loves me
Everybody Hates me
think I'll go and eat worms.... |

Goodness Celine!! What a tantrum!
Really - I was not attacking you!! Can't you take a difference of opinion? Free speech???
You talk about Drs being open minded - I have heard of many unscrupulous Drs who have made a fortune out of bewildered and frightened parents by offering single vaccines for MMR and charging over £200 a shot. Many of these vaccinations are unlicensed.
There is a risk with everything we do in life - including vaccination. You have to get it into proportion. Why focus on the rare chance that something can go wrong? What about the right? The evidence is there to prove it and is far more reliable than the "evidence" to prove the claims of damage.
I smiled at your description of me being small minded health professional! Really!! I am not rising to that one!

Yes Karl, to moderate or not can be tricky at times - we have a forum that we hope will stay friendly and help people out with immigration information. Celine, our newest member, has clearly become rather angry about a subject that, although it started as a legitimate request for info, turned into a heated debate about a topic that has absolutely nothing to do with immigration. As a result of these discussions, wholly unrelated to immigration or New Zealand, Celine now feels the need to retire from the forums. Somehow the logic of all of this is beyond a simple chap like me, but I hope Celine's retirement will merely be temporary.
I'm now going to put my (thankfully very infrequently worn) moderator's hat on and lock this topic. I'll reopen it later for anyone seeking more info about NZ's immunisation policies.

I thought I'd seen this somewhere before but can't find the relevant thread...
Can someone please advise whether hubby and I should need any jabs for our trip to NZ which will include trips out to the Cook Islands, Oz etc. In particular, is malaria a prob anywhere as I appear to be the dish of choice wherever I come across the blighters!
Thanks!

I'm sure it's a temporary blip - not good house selling weather at the moment either so perhaps when the sun comes out later this week the buyers will too |
