Hi Kim,

We have some friends in Blenheim, they moved there in February. We visited them last month and the place is, in my opinion, paradise. People are very friendly, beautiful scenery ALL AROUND you, nice town which is very clean and has plenty of shops etc. Not sure of the job situation though, our friend is a welder which seems to be in demand. I'm in IT and there is next to nothing in that field around there.

Hope that helps.

Mark.

Hi Kim

My husband is currently living in Palmerston North and I'm hanging on here in the UK to sell the house and join him there.

He is very happy there - I visited for about 5 hours while he had his interview and we had a look around. It has most things you would need and is also a Uni town - theatre, cinema, library, concert stadium, decent places to eat, quite a cultural place really. I wandered around for a while and it has a sort of small town America feel about it and somehow I felt quite at home there and had my fingers crossed all the time he was in the interview. House prices are a lot cheaper than Wellington. Prices actually plummet 20 mins drive out of town where it is more rural. 45 mins drive to the beach - not a lot of traffic. Heard of a UK couple who bought a house with 9 bedrooms and 6 acres in slight need of decorative renovation for £78,000. Eek

He has only been there for 6 weeks and of course it's winter now - he drove to the beach one day and the wind was very strong - not that far from Wellington you see, which has the reputation for being very windy.

I can't really say much else as I don't actually have the experience of living there myself. Dave was offered a job in Auckland as well on a slightly higher salary but we opted for the job offer in Palmy as it is the rat race and traffic jams we are trying to escape and we just want a quieter, more laid back way of life. Palmy seems to offer that. Also fairly central for access to North and South Island. Only a short hop to Wellington if we want the bright lights of the city. Laughing

Palm North has a bad reputation amoung some of the locals. Not sure why being a Nelsonian myself, it was either the weather or some capital snobbishnish I picked up while studying in Wellington. Keep in mind that most New Zealanders tend to think that their town is the best in the country with the exception of many Aucklanders as so many of them move there for economic reason rather than some deep connection to the place.

Dunedin will be cold in the winter. Houses are really cheap there although they've gone up 80% in the last couple of years. My sister bought hers for about $50,000. Check insulation very carefully in the older houses as a lot of 1950's era house only had roof insulation. Hidden costs there. It's got a good character and lots of Scottish buildings and placenames. If you can get a job there I'd recommend it.

Blemhein is hot and dry most of the time. Major industry is wine and other horticulture. If you like practical work you'll do fine. If your skills are more in the office then it's tighter. I majored in maths and it was impossible for me to find degree related work in Nelson. I plan to qualify as a highschool teacher because the country is crying out for goo maths teachers.

Very nice place to live. Lots of vineyards and wineries, close to beaches, great climate. Used to be a small village, but has grown heaps, though still a small town by British standards. Property there very desirable so therefore slightly more expensive than Hastings and Napier.
Good schools too.
