Had a look at a couple of internet shopping sites e.g.Woolworths and the prices seem very similar to the UK. Expected them to be lower as salaries less etc. Are the internet prices not typical of general supermarket prices?

Woolworths are not the cheapest place to shop. I consider them the rough equivalent of Sainsbury's, with a well laid-out, pleasant shopping environment and 'nice' things to buy. Pak 'n save, perhaps the rough equivalent of Asda is much cheaper. (milk is $3 per 2L in Woolies, $2 in Pak 'n Save)
Prices vary enormously from one shop to another and special offers are generally on for one week at a time, with other prices suitably raised to accommodate. Fairly soon though you get to know what is a good price for things and just avoid buying stuff which is hiked to make specials look better next month. Someone else will always have it on special if you care to look anyway....
Remember that some foods are sold as loss leaders by almost all supermarkets in the UK which is not the case so much here. bread and milk are sold at a loss by most UK supermarkets but you get charged the earth for meat and second quality veg. tanstaafl....
What do others think about 'equivalences' of NZ and UK supermarkets? |

| In response to the cost of grocery shopping in NZ, I too was surprised by the cost of supermarket shopping over here. I was led to believe it is significantly cheaper than IK but I shop at Pak n Save and I think sometimes it is 5-10% cheaper but it isn't a big difference. Also you have to watch where you buy things you can't just rely on everything being cheaper at Pak n Save - you'll often find that other supermarkets have got some of the basics on offer or certain fruit and veg is cheaper elsewhere. I have found that I need to shop around a bit and keep an eye on prices. |
