Hi all,
We are at the stage at the moment of thinking that moving to NZ would be alovely idea, give us more for our money, a nice lifestyle etc but are pondering because it would have to be fantastic to get over the upset we would cause the ageing members of our family. Is it REALLY as good for those of you over there or who know NZ as we think it could be? PS I am a nurse / health visitor and husband a Royal Navy mechanical engineer about to retire, in case tat makes a difference! |

Hi Sandie,
I know *exactly* where you are coming from. I had a chat with my mum last night about my plans and I am having second thoughts. My sister moved to Aus 3 years ago and my brother is also moving out there. When I told her we were planning on going to NZ she looked crushed. I worry about who will look after her and my dad when they get older (they are just retirement age). My dads health isn't fantstic and I fret that my mum will be very lonely if she hasn't got family around and my dad passes away.
If it wasn't for my mum I would be out there like a shot!

I think this thread goes to very core of what keeps us together as a family. Certainly its hard...very hard and even harder when like us, you have young ones you are taking with you! NZ is a wonderful place indeed but its not for everyone! I would recommend anyone to visit a country they planned to migrate to first before making the decision and to take the hype at face value! After all one mans (or womans) meat is another mans (or womans) poison! I don't mean to decry NZ at all...I'm going back by hook or by crook after all, but for those of you who don't know the country or the lifestyle....LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!
You could always try to tempt them out there or failing that become a yo-yo! If you go long enough to get citizenship (3-4 years say) you can always come back for a few years and leave the door open for your own future unhindered migration!!!!!!!! I know its hedging your bets but people do it!!!!! |
