hello everyone. please forgive me for my first post being a bit controversial. i'm thinking about moving to pastures new and (please don't hit me ) australia seems a better option than new zealand. it's bigger, it's wealthier and it's warmer. ao why is everyone so keen on new zealand? |

| trouble with all that "warmth" is most people can't function in aussie heatwaves. its too hot to do anything but sit sweating in your house or turn up the air conditioning if you've got it. kids can't go to playparks because everythings too hot to touch. in northern australia its so sweaty that people get fungus under their armpits and other places i won't mention. you get pleasant warmth in new zealand and you're not worried that a bush fires going to burn your house down. |

The heat!!! The summers here seem to be getting warmer every year Last summer I recall a day when Melbourne reached the 40's, we unfortunately dont have air con so we decided to stay in and pray for a cool change. The change did come but not before the temperature at home rose so high that door handles were hot to the touch.
I look forward to more comfortable summers in NZ. |

Hi Eve,
It seems really unusual from my perspective that someone is moving away from all that warmth rather than towards it. Surely all you need to do is get some air conditioning and treat the really hot days the way we not so hardy northerners deal with a really cold or really wet day?
I wonder if you could say whether you have any other reasons for leaving Australia apart from the heat?
I'm sorry to be nosy but it's quite important to me as I'm trying to do as much research on the web about possible countries to emigrate to.
Thank you and good luck with your move. |

In my opinion both countries are the best in the world to live in (I am biased of course!)
So it depends on your personal preferences which one to go for.
Australia has (much) warmer weather and (arguably) a higher standard of living and economic opportunities.
On the other hand, distances between places of interest in Australia are huge. And the hot weather can be a real problem in summer, even in southern cities like Adelaide and Perth where summer temperatures above 100 deg F are normal. Unless you enjoy sitting inside an air conditioned environment 24 hours a day, this will drive you crazy, especially during prolonged heat waves. Things are even worse in tropical northern Australia. Also, while Australia has a better standard of living, NZ has an (arguably) better quality of life (lower crime, less pollution, more scenic, less distances to travel, cheaper housing).
If you are an outdoors person like myself (hiking, skiing, etc) then NZ is the winner for lifestyle. |

Hi H. Bowen,
All the things Aurora mentioned basically make up the reason why I have decided to give NZ a go. Air con doesnt solve the problem for me. It may seem like a trivial thing but I think you have to experience the heat for a week or two to appreciate it. I dont want to whine but the weather here is really annoying! It can be 39 C one day and 16 C the next! I love Melbourne and yes Australia is a great country but I want four seasons in a year and not in one day |

Out of the frying pan and into the fire? Not really . Chch can have big temperature swings too though - especially if a Norwester day in spring/summer/autumn (25 - 35 deg C) gives way to a southerly. The temperature can drop 10 - 15 deg in the space of an hour or two. Thankfully it only ever goes above 30 deg occasionally. Good luck with your move. |

Doesn't seem likely at the moment. I don't have the figures but spring this year feels like it's been cooler and wetter than usual. It keeps the dairy farmers happy though. |
