Hi All Smile

Okay...here's a "little thing" that we've found to be somewhat unique to NZ:

TOILETS! Mr. Green Yes, that's right...toilets! Not that they are unique to NZ, but NZ toilets rock!! Nice One We've travelled a bit and have yet to find facilities better than the ones in NZ!

As there isn't a water shortage here (first it rains, then it rains a bit, rain cloud then there's a little more rain), there is no such thing as a "low-flow" toilet as far as I can tell. When you flush...whoosh! Eek The bowl is as clean as a whistle! (And we all like a fresh bowl right?! Laughing )

Another great feature is a "number 1" and "number 2" flush option. The first is a quick flush and the second a full-blown tidal wave...for obvious reasons.

The only thing we can't figure out is how to "jiggle the handle" when the toilet is "running". There are no handles, just push buttons on top! Oh well. Laughing

So there, I've put it out there and I'm proud! Embarassed

Rich, thanks so much for the advise on toilets! I'm not kidding either! Here we now have (in a public toilet) self-flushing, plus no handles on the water spigot, it senses your presence, and even the paper towels have to sense your presence now before they dispense! Why are all these new-fangled ways so hard in the long run! Just my humble opinion cool

The toilets will be a nice change from the mandatory low-flows here! But do any Kiwis install bidets?

And what the heck is Milo, anyway? Is it similar to Ovaltine?

Yeah, it's awful. My husband loves it and went gaga when he found it in a Down Under shop near where we live.. I tried it and spat it into the sink!!!

A word about toilets.. I must say I was so disappointed when, on my first trip Down Under to Australia, I learned the water in the toilets does NOT swirl in the opposite direction as it does here in the States -- it swirls bottom to top!! The commodes are designed to flush in a completely different manner than what I was used to here.. I was bereft!! And for the life of me, I can't remember how they flushed in NZ.....

Never saw a bidet there, though.

All the best, Rae

GOOD NAPPY CHANGING FACILITIES ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN!

Yes....... forget the comforts of ASDA, TESCO and the like who provide top class changing facilities in parent roomsor toilets...... These are few and far between in NZ.

So you get that tell tale odour that tells you the wee bairn (bairn's in my case with asyncronous bowel movements) has just emptied it's alimentary canal and it's usually half way through your big weekly shop! The funny looks at the deli counter.....the knowing smiles....the feeling your personal space has just increased ten fold....what do you do?

Grin and bare it I’m afraid....unless you wan to use the floor in the customer toilet..........(FOODTOWN TAKE NOTE)

Glenfield Mall and Takapuna Westfield centres on the North are exceptions but ...am I blind....are they camouflaged?

My solution a nice high Renault Megane Scenic with a perfectly positioned adjustable rear shelf that’s as near to perfect as I've found!

Is it true that the direction of water drained is anti-clockwise when you're in the southern hemisphere (i.e. NZ, Australia, etc.)? Here in the northern hemisphere it's the opposite. Explanation, anyone?

no it's a bit of science myth; the water could drain in either direction in either hemisphere. There is a good discussion of the subject here:

Oh no don't say its a hoax, we went to the same spot as Michael Palin on the Equator in Kenya a few years ago, sorry to say I fell for it but feel in good company with Mr Palin !

LOL, michelle, thanks for that!!

Actually, I already knew it was an urban myth... but I just couldn't help wanting to check it out for myself... discovering it was a moot point was what disappointed!!

Thanks for setting the record straight!!

Hi Tate6,

The water I've tasted up in Auckland is terrible, full of chlorine.

Christchurch has, supposedly, the purest water supply in the world. It comes straight from artesian wells in the ground with no chemicals added whatsoever. So I guess you could say we have mineral water on tap in Christchurch. The first time I had it, I thought it tasted a little funny, but now I don't notice anything. I just notice the taste of chlorine if I travel elsewhere.

Oh, that's interesting. Do you drink the tap water? What about the amount of lime in the water? Is it 'soft' or 'hard' water? We drink tap water each day and the tea is wonderful without that lime film on it, do you know what I mean?

I came with partner and kids for holiday last July - we were amazed at how many old cars there were around NZ, and in mint condition. My partner is a car nut and loved it...."cor, look at that Mk1 cortina, oh look there's a Rover coupe over there" etc.
Is it that the weather is kinder to their cars or is it really 20 years back in time!

Isn't it wonderful that little kids still walk to school out there, on their own!!!

Yes Timbo, but Karl will have forgotten that there's such a thing as frost living up on the North Shore. Yes

Different down south but the ice that you get on the roads here in Chch is insignificant compared with what you'll get in most parts of the UK. Mind you, driving into Dunedin last winter, coming down the hill on the north side of the city was a pretty hairy experience with ice and gravel all over the main road. Eek
