Oh, that's interesting. Do you drink the tap water? What about the amount of lime in the water? Is it 'soft' or 'hard' water? We drink tap water each day and the tea is wonderful without that lime film on it, do you know what I mean? |
Hi Zoush, according to the city council, Christchurch's water is not "hard" and does not require treatment for softening for washing machines.
Yes, everyone drinks water from the tap.

Hey JCM...we had a frost yesterday!....BBBrrr...you had to be up at 6:00am to see it, and it was only a slight one but definately there!!! I think I'm going to move further north....BOI perhaps!!!!!!!! No not really.....love snow..(ski nut) |
Crikey I thought frosts on the North Shore were as rare as hen's teeth. A ground frost rather than a true air frost I presume? |

Good as gold
This has been a favourite Kiwi expression meaning they agree with you or that they'll do something you've asked or just to say that something's good. I used to hear it so often that it began to grate on the nerves a little. I haven't heard it so often lately. Going out of fashion? |

Has anyone else noticed how hard it is to open vacuum sealed glass jars such as jam etc. ? I must be a weedy pome I suppose but some of them are very nearly impossible to get into without a geriatric "Ktel/Acme" jar opener of which I am devoid! |
Hi Karl
The secret is to break the vacuum. Take an ordinary kitchen knife and push it up between the lid and the glass. The vacuum breaks and the lid comes off easily. |

It works .....very well...... but the casualty nurse at AKL hospital wasn't impressed!!!
Seriously though I have just had an encounter with a Watties Baked Bean Tin!!! I was cleaning it for recycling with a dish brush and twisted it into my index finger.....very deep infact.....so in typical Rambo/crocodile Dundee style I put a stitch in it ...... much ti my wifes disgust as I asked her to tie it off. Accidents are becoming a way of life for us at the moment!!

I would imagine that NZ pays a fair amount of attention to the weather, especially maritime forecasts. And there is a weather channel on Sky TV, thank goodness.
As for the shipping news, well, emigrate to a port city! Here's Wellington's port activity: http://www.centreport.co.nz/shipping/movements |

Hi BGreen,
Here's a reply I wrote for someone else with similar concerns:
I think you'd need to catch the shipping forecast live though................... there are warnings of gales in Viking, North Utsire, South Utsire, Forties, Fisher, Rockall, Hebrides, Bailey, Fair Isle, and Faeroes ......................ah it all comes back to me.
Hi Veronica,
Yes, you're right about the shortened version.......
Karl - they must breed 'em tough (or mad ) in Brumingham. |

| Hi i've been enjoying reading the posts in this forum. Some excellent info. Would it be fair to assume that New Zealand is not very much different from the UK but the main differences are more space, friendlier people, warmer weather and badly insulated houses? All the other differences are just "little things"? Cheers. |
