Is it worth bringing lamps and light fittings from the UK? We have some nice ones my wife is rather attached to, but don't know whether they would be compatabe re fittings and electricity supply etc.

Also, we have certain kitchen goods we want to take, such as an ice cream maker, food mixer. Is it as simple as replacing UK plug with NZ plug, or is it a bit more complicated than that?

I am absolutely rubbish at electrics.....and plumbing, DIY and anything else home related, so any help people can give would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Lee

As far as I know you can take everything, last time we took some small electrical stuff and it worked fine just changed the plugs. Quite a few people have said to buy the 4 plug adapters that way you only need to change the one plug. Not sure about light fittings though.

We are useless at DIY, depend on my dad for everything but went out yesterday and bought some basic tools to at least be able to attempt stuff. Sure I read somewhere that all DIY stuff is quite pricy. If that fails have told my Dad he can give me directions via a web cam !

Michelle,

Thanks for the quick response.

Yes, I think many tools are more expensive in NZ, although whether that is relative to US rather than UK I am not sure.

We rely on my Dad for DIY as well. It is pathetic isn't it, my delicate white collar hands turn into clumsy butterfingers as soon as I pick up a screwdriver! I do quite like drilling though, but since the "wonky shelves" incident my wife keeps the drill under lock and key.

I bought a drill yesterday, my husband turned white, not at the thought that he was going to have to use it but what I was planning to do with it! Am seriously considering purchasing a jigsaw next and not the sort that comes with 1000 pieces and makes a pretty picture.

Have seen lots of very dodgy NZ interiors, they don't seem to be big on DIY so will no doubt have to learn some new skills either that or get my Dad over more often !

Anyone ever refitted a lamp. I have an antique lamp that my grandfather gave me as a wedding gift. I was going to give it to a family member as it is american and not compatable.

But if I could swap out innards, it may be worth it.

A long shot of a question, I know

Hi, justin,

Bring your lamp. Changing the innards isn't usually a big deal -- that's what we're doing with 2 sentimental favorites!

Now.. if only I could do the same with my great grandfather's old Seth Thomas kitchen clock....

All the best, Rae
