For anybody driving through from Gisborne to Napier (via Wairoa) I'd recommend stopping off at the Morere Hot Springs - see below

Accomodation is across the road and appears pretty standard, it's the isolation that wins it. They do have a nice self catering cottage which is well off the road and the current owners cook a good brekkie and make a mean bowl of coffee.
More to the point the Hot Springs are a great way to relax, the pools are naturally heated and for a few bucks you can get into a private pool, get your kit off and sit loking out onto open rainforest - that's when our holiday really starts. What's even nicer is when your father in law lives 200 yds away!!
