just curious as to availibility of mortgages in NZ for ex-pats. If we turned up in NZ, rented for 6 months while choosing house/area etc we would only have 6 months NZ credit rating and only 6 months NZ work history.... does this have a negative effect on getting a mortgage?
We would have had equity from our house sale in NZ bank for 6 months and would only want max 50 or 60K NZD (if we needed a mortgage at all) but just curious about availibility.
Sorry if this has come up before but...big decisions take lots of questions |

Hi
If you write to Jeremy Henderson at www.broadbase.co.nz/immigrate
he will advise you (I know he told some friends who arrived last feb, if you have a job and can afford the repayments..you can get a mortgage within a week of landing)
you can also ask him about converting currency at wholesale rates for you...FOR FREE tell him Nic said so (he is really nice, and tells the truth...rare for an advisor I know!) He is in chch but covers the whole country, so you dont have to live in chch to use him.
Others may have some other people they can recommend for you.
Nicky

We have already arranged with our bank here in the UK for a letter of recommendation, which will hopefully help with mortgages/credit cards etc.

Most banks will not issue a credit card to you. ASb was the exception but we had to twist their arm. They want you to be PR's before they give you credit!
Mortgages are more easy to come by because the bank has a collateral security in your house. You will get about 5 times you annual in come if you are a PR or about 4 times if on a visa.
Superbank are offering 6.00% on any level of deposit with immediate access...one of the best deals going at the moment!

Just found this scheme by accident. It could be of use to you if you have to wait for funds to be transferred to nz.
