Could any of you lucky people please give me an idea of the costs of motoring in NZ from buying a car to running it, servicing it, insuring it.....everything.

Cheers

p.s. Do you get Top Gear?

I think that cars here are dearer. This is expecially true once you start earning a local wage. Petrol is cheap. We own a 2.5 V6 Nissan. It costs $60 to fill from empty. It costs us a little under £200 to insure fully comp. We were paying £500 in the UK for a 2L mondeo. You just pay registration which is a couple of hundred $ a year I think then its just WOF (MOT) that is about $30.

Hope this helps.

Hi Andy, Check out BBC World on TV1 in the early hours of the morning. Smile

Some more costs:

Petrol $1.03 per litre at the moment.

Car insurance $265 fully comp. for 9 year old Station Wagon (estate car) in excellent condition because no salt on roads means no rust. Yes

Cheers guys. Nice One

Any ideas why insurance is so cheap if the roads are meant to be a bit riskier than the UK? Confused

Could anyone say what sort of 4wd I could pick up for around $20,000?

I think this is to do with the fact that the government pays accident insurance or rather the taxpayer does.

Interesting lot that one...

For 20k you can have your pick of clean 4WDs about 7 or less years old, depending on model and make. Hundreds to choose from with prices for a 10yo vehicle with low km and no rust about $10,000 or so.

Insurance is cheap here as it is not possible to sue anyone for personal injury - the ACC covers the costs of medical treatment and possible compensation. Clapping

Petrol is cheap at $1.10 per litre and diesel at $0.64 even more so. BEWARE - diesel vehicles have to pay 3c per km for 'road user charges' so the benefit is minimal for smaller engines.

WOF is required every 6 months for vehicles first registered outside NZ and costs $30 but this is the same sort of nuisance value as the MOT.

Road tax is similar to the UK price.

Most kiwis seem to drive older cars imported from Japan as they are cheap and reliable. Given the absence of salt on the roads and not much rain in christchurch, I hardly ever see a rusty car.

Depends what sort of 4WD you're after. I recently picked up a 1997 Subaru station wagon (4WD, good condition) for $6,800.

Hi
I have a contact in NZ that imports cars direct from auctions in Japan.

Please contact me if you want to get in touch.

Hi Peter,

I too am interested in direct vehicle imports from Japan. Ive tried a search on the net but with no luck. is it the case that you can supply them with a requirement and they will hunt the car you want down and ship across? Any help you could supply would be great

Could someone make me a comparison in real terms of running a 4WD diesel and a similar 4WD petrol?? This 3c a kmthing has me concerned.

In NZ do they have 'no claims bonus' on car insurance like they do in the UK? If so do you think it is worth taking previous ins. certificates to try and get best rate?

Hi Lauren

We used our no claims from the Uk when we took out insurance. We didnt have proof either we just gave the company name and address. Not sure if they checked it out, or just took our word for it!

State insurance company do offer no claims and require to see proof so it is worth taking.
In my case, I paid the full premium up front and they have promised to refund the difference when the proof arrives.
The NCB will result in about 50% reduction in cost. My insurance will drop from £695 annually to $270 on equivalent cover for a higher group car...
