Hey Everyone.

We are planning to move with the 'minimalisat' approach, selling everything bar, clothes, CD's and my stereo. That is being shipped over before us and stored with relatives till we arrive.

My question is, if anyone has any experience of mountain bike transport, we will be using our mountain bikes right up till we go and i was wondering if these can be loaded onto the plane at heathrow and sent with us when we fly out? I suspect if it can, there will be a reasonable cost involved, but has anyone done something like this?

Never done it but I would suggest you contact the airline concerned for advice. They will be able to tell you if you can and how much it would cost

Another point, and I am only guessing, is that I think it will get a good going over when you arrive so make sure there isn't a speck of dirt on it.

I looked into this. Basically, you have your baggage allowance (usually 20kg, depends on airline) and anything over that will be charged at whatever rate the airline sets - and we were quoted in the region of 20-50 UKP / kilo excess baggage. It needs to be packaged securely - a box from a cycle shop will do, well padded with bubble wrap and pedala / handlebar removed. Do telephone the airline - they will give you the rates. Also, as Michelle says, your bike will have to be squeaky clean to pass through customs: steam / jet cleaned, washed down with disinfectant, etc. HTH.

Some airlines e.g. Air NZ will give you a discount rate for air-freight with your ticket. Air NZ will give you up to 50% off! Crap in-flight entertaiment though......dark ages I'm afraid!

If you come via LAX ...which is an absolutely CRAP airport to travel through by international standards...you can get 60kg allowance with any carrier. 2 pieces not excedding 30kg each!

If it travels as baggage then there are limits on max dimensions of Length+height+width to be observed....but with some airlines this can be a bit negotiable!

Nice One
