Hi all UK members.
There's a tv prog on Channel 4 on Weds. 24th March at 4pm looking at Napier. May be worth setting your video if you're looking to this area Smile

Thanks a lot for letting us know about this programme - can't wait to watch it this afternoon as have never been and it's hard to get an insight(especially like this) into what it's really like there.

I'm going on a working holiday visa in July so thank you. cool

i missed it - according to someone i know who 'sort of' watched it an older couple paid a large sum of money for a 'house' in napier that looked more like a garden shed. Eek

any comments?

Confused Not quite the same programme I saw!

A retired couple bought their daughters home in Napier, a 4 bed bungalow with decent size garden, but was in need of re-decoration and a new kitchen. Deck out back would be a nice touch too IMHO.
Put them back the princely sum of £50,000! Sure they could've paid a bit more and bought a better place but guess they wanted to help their daughter out, who was looking to sell, and maybe they didn't want the hassle of trying to find a place after arriving in NZ.
My 4 bed bungalow is on the market in Guernsey for £280,000 and is in pretty similar condition but without the garage and sleep out Smile
I'm looking at moving to Napier later this year and there are no longer 4 bedroom houses in that price bracket - even those that need some work. I expect to pay £100 to £150K for a similar or (hopefully) somewhat better property.

I think what perhaps makes people think "shed" is the fact that most houses in NZ are timber clad (or similar) with a tin roof. quite sensible in earthquake zones really as if the roof came down with tiles it is considerably heavier than tin.

Wish we had seen it, love Napier especially when you get up on the hill.

We spent a few nights there en route to Wellington last year, I remember walking along the sea front near the aquarium on a Sunday evening and realising that no traffic had passed us in the last half an hour.

Good luck with the house hunting, there's plenty of choice.

Just wish the house prices were still at the £50k level Nice One
Once the mortgage/car loan/credit cards etc.etc. are paid off we won't have too much more than that......but we will be debt free Clink At least until we buy a place in NZ Nutcase
