Hi,
I am from the Philippines, and I have a BS in Electronics and Communications Engineering (a 5-year course).
I am in the early phases of applying for immigration to NZ. Like most of you, I have gone through the pile of paper called Expression of Interest Form.
However, when I checked immigration manual, I am surprised to find that the college I went to is not among those reconised by the NZ government. Does it mean that my education will not be given points?
I want to make sure about this before I lodge my application and pay the stiff (by Philippine standards) fee. Please help.

Hi Boyet,
According to the NZIS, to discover whether you will get points or not, you will need to have your qualification assessed by the NZQA:
You can qualify for points for qualifications such as trade certificates, diplomas, bachelor degrees and post-graduate qualifications. Your qualification must align with those we have accepted in the List of Recognised Qualifications. If it does not we may require NZQA to assess your qualification. the points you can earn for a recognised qualification will depend on what level we assess your qualification to be on the New Zealand Register of Quality Assured Qualifications.

Hi JCM,
Thanks for the info.
From what I understand from the quote you cited, since the college I went to is not among those recognized I will have to submit the EOI plus the fee first before NZIS will ask the NZQA to assess my qualifications. And if I don't qualify, I may (or may not) get a refund, depending on when I submit the EOI.
Is there a way for the NZQA to pre-qualify my before I submit my EOI?
Happy holidays! |

Hi, I have the same problem! The NZQA doesn't have my school on the list.
Is that how you interpreted the paragraph? That we go ahead and submit the EOI and THEN they ask for verification if the NZQA needs it? I'd hate to spend the $$ on the NZQA assessment, and then another $$ on the EOI form if I don't have to.
A possible light in the dark tunnel..... |

Hi bigshotla,
Yup, that's how I interpreted the paragraph cited by JCM. So, it's kinda risky filing the EOI before you're pre-qualified by the NZQA. Might as well (in my opinion) have your credentials assessed first before you file the EOI.
Happy New year and Good Luck to you!

Hi Bigshotla and Boyet,
I think you're onto it. I'm sure the way the government intends the system to work is that, if you're in any doubt about your qualifications (your university or college is not on the NZIS qualifications list), you should get a pre-assessment of them from the NZQA before submitting your Expression of Interest.
http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/for-international/qual-eval/preassessment-result/index.html
At NZ$75.00 it's not very expensive and will be carried out within 10 days. |

| Thanks - you're right! I swore I thought I read it cost US$415. I must be losing my mind. Thanks for clearing that up. |
