Hi All. I'm new here and I'm highly impressed with your board. Nice One
My fiancee, her daughter and I are intending going to NZ next year and are researching what we need to do. I am a maintenance engineer (electrician) and would be looking for a job in the same area when we go over. My fiancee is a beauty therapist and she wants to do that with the aim of starting her own business in the future.
I know that I have to be registered to work as an electrician, so the plan is to get in touch with the ewrb about 5-6 weeks before we go to book the tests for registration and do them as soon as possible when we go over. does anybody know if the HND beauty therapy is recognised in NZ, or will we have to pay the qualifications equivelance people to get something from them saying what the equivelant qualification is? (my qualifications are recognised Mr. Green )
We are going to go to Auckland because we can get a place to stay FOC till we get ourselves sorted out, so there should be plenty of job and training opportunities for the two of us. Our wee girl will be just out of primary and starting secondary school, can anybody tell us when the school year starts? We want to go over next July or August.
Sorry for the long rambling post, there's a lot to find out before we go and you guys look like being the best place to find it Nice One Nice One

You are in Primary till you are either 13 1/2 or 12...depending when your birthday is. I know, weird.

You go to year 8, and your 5th birthday is the day you START school (so you have wee ones starting all year) then the next year is year ONE. The first year is o

Good luck with everything, how exciting for you all

A HND in virtually any subject will be recognised in NZ as long as it was obtained from a recognised institution. A list is available on the NZIS web site. You would only have to go through NZQA assessment i f you were using this as part of an EOI and your parnter was the principle applicant but since she isn't its not a problem! As a rule of thumb HND's are generally considered to be equivalent to A NZ certificate. Don't think she'll have muc trouble landing a position or strting her own business. Just a thoght and less risky...she could look to become a partner in a business or add her services to say a hairdressing salon etc as an offshoot! A lot of these type of businesses can be run from home in which case you could get some tax breaks!

Thanks for your help Clapping . We're so looking forward to going over. My brother and sister in law went over a couple of years ago, but my sis in law broke her neck when she fell in the shower Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes , so they came back over here once she was out of hospital and got the halo unscrewed from her head. They loved it, said it was a great place to live and to work, because it was so multi cultural. They want to go back as soon as they can as well. My brother had a job with Ricoh and they said they'll give him a job as soon as he's back over, so it's good for them to have that sorted out. We're going to be selling my house soon to start our savings off and cut down on our outgoings for the next year, so that we've got a bit to fall back on in case it takes either of us a while to get work.
Reading through previous posts, it seems that the best way to go over is on a holiday visa, then look for work and try to get it changed to a work visa, would you agree with that method of doing it? And do we need to get a student visa for Kara (our daughter, well, my nearly step-daughter, but I see her as mine Razz ) or does that not matter if one of us gets a work visa?
We're excited about going over now, who knows what we'll be like nearer the time!!!
Thanks again for your help.

Sounds like a reasonable plan...make sure you get a student visa for kara! Also make sure you have the required paperwork for guardianship etc...

Good Luck!
