Hi all -
Let me begin by saying that this 'idea' of up and moving across the world to New Zealand has been stewing for a couple years. I kept passing it off as fantasy - but since 'the idea' keeps nagging at me - I thought I should listen up and check it out.
I've been doing a little research, somewhat haphazardly. Now that I've found this place, seems I have a much greater resource, so I can answer some hard questions.
I really beleive the cultural transition wouldn't be a big deal for me. It's the work issue I am having a hard time researching.
I am a Mosaic artist\designer\installer here in California for 6 yrs - have my own business. Being a specialty trade, I'm having a hard time finding out information.
Would any of you have any ideas for me - avenues of information to explore?
thanks - any input would be greatly appreciated! |

| Some of the other guys may have better ideas, but my initial thought would be "can you apply under the talent visa". I am not to sure of your prospects under the normal visa but if you have your own business anyway you could approach it through the Long term business visa. 3 years temp visa with a perminant residency if the business is successful. |

This idea of moving to NZ has been stewing in my mind for quite some time. I'm getting tired of the political crap in the USA. If they reinstitute a draft, I want to leave. DOn't want my kids to get draftedd for Texaco's wars. NZ seems idea. Industrialized, speaks english, educated, and peaceful. Only problem is that running those general skills self-tests, I can't get over 110. Which means i guess, that I haven't a chance. This is even though int he US my wife and I are earning over $200,000.00 a year. Does this make sense? I should think that an two professionals with MAsters degrees and over with heaps of money would be shown right in.
Since I'm new I would appreciate input on how this works.
I'm a 13 year practicing attorney in the US. I don't know how much calling there is for my line of work. Can't imagine there'd be that much. |

Hi Muttony
If I were you I would investigate the NZ legal system for an opening. You will need to sit the bar exams again but hey with your experience that should'nt take too much effort. Also seek out those companies trading with the USA, they may need someone with your kind of knowledge....better still fins a US company with offices in NZ and get a posting!
As for US politics at the moment ...don't tempt me

Another newbie here. We have been looking at NZ for about 2 years now. We are entreprenaurs within the tourism in Sweden but we are not at all comfortable with the climate. We nearly bought a camping-ground in Kaitaia two years ago but hesitated to make the move then. Now we feel more motivated to take the final step. I just found this place (this forum) and it feels good to se so many positive souls that one can relate to and share thoughts with. I´ll be back........ ........if anyone of you know anybody who´s involved in fishing as a business feel free to contact me |
