The housing market in Nelson is going bananas. There are more opportunities in Christchurch. I'd like to ask if there are nice villages within around half an hour of Christchurch where a house and a few acres of nice land can be picked up for less than $300,000. Thank you very much. |

short answer No, However, there are a lot of small farmlet lifestyle blocks to the NW of Chch, but you will need more than 300K for these.
Ashburton to the south is very small town, as is Rangiora. Banks Peninsula is nice, but very little services, poor communications, and isolated. |

I think gordster is right.
I'm sure if you were to venture a little farther out, to Darfield for example, you will find what you're looking for. Darfield is a nice little village with its own high school around 40 km from Western Christchurch. You can do that in half an hour or so but then you have to add on more time to get into the city centre. Traffic coming in from the west (Darlield, West Melton, Yaldhurst) is quite manageable. I haven't looked at house prices out Darfield way recently and the web is a poor guide as most of the plots of land (described as 'sections' here) and houses in the rural areas don't seem to make it as far as the web - at least not that I've seen. Certainly last year you would have got what you were looking for for less than $300,000. |

| Ahhhhhhhh this carries me back to about five and a half years ago. That's when I was looking on the internet at houses with v.large gardens in the villages around chch . In the end laziness got the better of me and we settled for a suburban house in about 850 sq meters. I still dream of my country 'estate' though. |
