Hi all,
Hope someone can help.

We are now living in Chch and have just submitted our EOI. We have 175 points so hopefully will be selected soon and will have to undergo the medical. We do not have a Doctor (GP) yet over here and hope not to need one but do need to get the medical done. Can anyone who has been through the procedure in NZ let us know approx costs so we know what to expect.
Any good Doctor recommendations/advice would be appreciated. In the UK we automatically went to the closest surgery. Do we or should we do the same here?

Thanks in advance.
L.

Hi Lauren

You can go to any doctor and you are not obliged to ever see them again. Simply ring for an appointment and you can go. Several centres here do a lot of immigration medicals - you should ask before booking if that service is provided, and request a quote.

x-rays and reports will cost you about $70 each.

It is advisable to choose a family doctor and register with them (you are free to change later) for a few reasons.

Most importantly you get a long-term relationship with the GP and are eligible for 24 hour care (casual patients are not).

You may be treated preferentially in terms of appointments if you are a regular patient.

All sorts of agencies will need to know your GP (including schools, health insurers etc)

You get automatic reminders for vaccinations and other health screening checks as they come due.

If your GP is a member of a co-operative society which provides out of hours care, you may get a discount if you ever need the services of the out of hours doctor.

Please feel free to contact me if you need to know any more!
Lauren

Thanks Robert, knew you would know the answer.
Almost sent an email but decided info shared is better for all.

Will let you know if we encounter any problems but sounds straightforward.

Thanks again,
L.
