We're starting to box up everything to ship over - do we need to list EVERY SINGLE ITEM in each box or can the inventory be more general like "Towels, clothes and shoes" etc..... ???
Are there certain things that must be listed??
ARGH! |

Hi Moorf
Crown have just taken my stuff and they have listed each box. Most of the boxes they have just put ornaments, pictures, clothing, cd's, tapes they haven't put the amounts of each thing. They have specified the make and model of anything electrical like the computer, printer, sewing machine, DVD, fax machine.
I did insist that they wrote down two items of silver as they had lumped them in with ornaments, but I wanted them listing separately - after they'd packed them of course - but the packer remembered that it was either box 8 or 9. I made sure he altered his copy as well - just to be on the safe side.
It's gone at last - all boots smelling nicely of Dettol. I'm a little bit worried about one thing. There were little seeds blowing in through the window from a tree in the garden which got mixed up with my stuff and the packers weren't brushing them off - I hope the inspectors don't have a fit the other end if they come across any of the seeds.
Am I worrying unecessarily - as usual. |

Hi Sandra
What did you do about the silver, did you get it valued ?
Have to do my insurance thing this week, did you calculate replacement values in $ ?
Hope you found Crown OK, we have gone with them and have been impressed so far, very helpful

Hi Gals...
Well, I've just come off the phone with Anglo Pacific - they seem more geared towards what we want - i.e. we have approx 15 tea chests plus various large pictures that need shipping, it's all a bit of a jumble so we needed it all unpacked and repacked.
They have quoted £695 to go in to the storage bay and repack entire contents and wrap oversize etc, they will deal with all customs documentation (we just need to give them photocopy of our passport). They confirmed that inventories do not need to be detailed down to the last nuts and bolts - simply "ornaments" or "books & cds's" will do - they said that immigration do spot checks whether there are full inventories or not!
Maritime insurance is included in the above quote but specific insurances such as mechanical derangement etc are not... (for instance mechanical derangement insurance is 5% of value).
Doesn't sound too bad and means we can leave everything up to them - unlike others on this board we have sold all our furniture (except some antique furniture which we have distributed throughout the family until such time as we feel we want them back again!!).
This has taken a load off my mind... NEXT>........ !! |

Do you need mechanical derangement? if so we got it for 3% with crown so may be worth trying to get them down a bit.

Do you have their number to hand as I can only find a rather dodgy looking outfit with same name online!!

The number is 0800 919950 and their website is www.crownrelo.com. They're actually called Crown Relocations. You can also track your shipment on their website.

I didn't bother after all with the individual items list (but that means I'm not covered for mechanical derangement or mildew ) - I just went for the lump sum insurance valuation at £1,800 per cubic metre, total value £5,400 - the value doesn't come anywhere near that anyway and most of our stuff is irreplaceable sentimental things so I would be happy with £5,400 if the whole lot fell overboard the insurance was £194.40. Plus the fact I just couldn't be bothered thinking about it anymore. They were pretty efficient packing everything up - took 3 hours altogether and 2 cups of coffee |

this will be us in about a month's time.. what do they recommend for shipping the pictures? we have a large framed print with an ornate gold frame (that we found at a jumble sale) that we really want to take with us. it's very heavy with the glass etc. i was thinking it might be best to disassemble the whole thing, take the print in a tube, leave the glass behind and just ship the frame. then get the whole thing reframed later. i would have thought shipping the whole thing would be risky - if the glass smashed it would shred the print! any ideas?

I had one big picture that is really heavy with the glass and a metal frame. I have to take it because my Dad painted it for me.
They never said a word about it when they were packing and I got out of their way for most of the time because I felt like a spare part, so I didn't see what they did with everything, but it all seems to have been securely wrapped. Even Dave's tool box was wrapped in bubble wrap, so if they took good care of that then the pictures must have been well wrapped. |

| ah so they left it in one piece. did you have to pay any extras for it because of the glass, or the weight? |

I had to ask them (Anglo Pacific) specifically about pictures and prints as we also have quite a few- they said they will be wrapped and packed individually - this is exactly what happened when we moved down from Scotland with Bishops Move (who were v. good) - all prints were packed brilliantly and no damage done |

Well Whites came & went yesterday. It took them 7.5 hours to pack up our 4 bedroomed house. They said it would have taken another half a day if we hadn't of been so organised.
We basically has 2 piles of stuff that we wanted to take. 1 pile in the front room and 1 in the garage.
I told them that whilst we had put stuff into boxes, it would all need to be packed by them because all we had done was decide what we wanted to take. At least everything was together so they we able to pack more efficiently.
Last Thursday I started sorting stuff and had a skip delivered on Friday. It's now full!!!!!! but made clearing the house much easier ( as it was put underneath the windows at the front of the house and it was flung from the windows) as we had somewhere to put the rubbish as we were clearing and we didn't need to make endless trips to the tip.
As for an inventory, because the company packed all the boxes it does not need to be as detailed as if we had done some of the packing. They basically numbered each box with a brief description of what type of stuff is inside. We were then given a copy of the inventory so when we go and declare the stuff in Wellington, we can tick off each box as it comes passed us so we know we have received all the boxes.
I thought the men who came were superb, very respectful and hardworking. They really thought about what they were doing. it was a hard day but all the decisions had been made in advance to the packing day so we managed to avoid having to make hastey on the spot decisions about what to take on the day.
I wish you all well.

Sadie that seemed to go smoothly then, I am trying to be organised but will by the time they arrive. Planning on having one room of stuff to take with us, one with bedding towels etc, clothes in another, all pictures together. We have been told 2 days but although its a large ish house don't have much clutter.
Couldn't decide between Whites and Crown, in the end it came down to the insurance premiums.
Sandra, think we will have to do an inventory for the packing as we need mechanical derangement insurance, our house is like Currys !

We were gobsmacked at the speed at which Bishops Move packed up our house in Scotland - it took them about 6 hrs (4 bed house, 1 barn and a mountain of gardening stuff) - and all the stuff was really well packed - are these specially bred males?!!!!! |
