Just wondered if anybody had any info about Palmerston North. I have been offered a nursing job at the hospital and plan to move out next year with my family.

Hi Patsy and welcome Smile.

I've driven through Palmy North a couple of times and I've met some people from there on my travels. By all accounts the town is a pleasant, prosperous, enjoyable places to live. You'll notice a great feeling of space and trees I'd guess compared with Manchester. Palmy is home to Massey University so it has more going for it than most towns of 70,000 or so people.

There are some rougher spots too though, so be careful about the locality you choose - watch out in particular for a suburb called Highbury (its name is known throughout NZ!) where there was a gang murder a while back and there have been ongoing gang problems apparently.

Some Wellingtonians look down on Palmy North because it's inland and so doesn't have a harbour or beaches. They're probably just jealous because you can pick up a house in Palmy for a lot less than Wellington. Razz

If you've not already found it, you can keep up with local daily news at http://www.manawatueveningstandard.co.nz

Palmie is a lovely family based area, with a high concentration of univeristies and Schools.
I grew up there! It is a city set in the middle of a farming area. Nearby and cheaper towns include Ashhurst and Feilding. there are many beautiful rural areas in between.
Palmerston North boasts great shopping with excellent parking!
It has a fantastic nightlife and great restaurants.
George Street is my favourite for boutiques and tasty cafes- i haven't been there for 1and 1/2 years but i am sure it is still lovely.
Areas to live depend on your housing prefernces, some area are full of new developments whilst others have older character styled homes.
My family live on a farmlet in a place near feilding, and my father works in PN.
You can get cheaper houses in Feilding, pretty good schools there too.
And the PN hospital is located on the "Feilding side" of town, it only takes about 15-20 or so minutes to get there!
GOOD LUCK will probably be joining you next year!

Hi Patsy,

I'm in the same situation as you. I've been offered a job on the Neonatal Unit at Palmerston North hospital. We're hoping to be out by April but I've got a feeling it may be more like May. Anyway I'm married with 3 girls aged 7,3 and 1. I'm in contact with a couple of other girls who are also going out. Don't know too much about the area except what we are finding out on the net.

Hi

I have visited Palmie on several occasions as my sisiter in law lives there. I find the place very relaxing and friendly and intend to complete my immigration by the end of the year and will settle there. I have heard a couple of stories of the Highbury area, but to be honest it does'nt seem to bad. After growing up in the East end of London i've seen most things and this place seems pretty tame in comparason. You have the international airport on your doorstep, although you cant compare it with the UK - its very small. House prices are fairly cheap by NZ standards in Palmie and even cheaper in the towns surrounding. Apart from the beach, you have everything there. The hospital looks very new, but never been in there.

Good luck

Hi there,

We're at the initial stages of applying to emigrate and without wanting to jump the gun, we're looking at Palmy as a possible spot to live.

I'll be working (Neil!) and my wife will probably work p/t if poss as we've got 2 small children (4yrs + 2months old).

My wife has reservations about Palmy though and would like to know:

1. what amenities are available for young children? Toddler groups, parks, etc? Good nurseries/schools?

2. how far is it from the beach? Smile

Any help appreciated, thankyou!

Don't cry Moorf, I didn't really mean it. Laughing

I know it's only about 30 - 40 mins drive to the beach but I'm not sure how good it is. Dave went on a cold windy, winter morning and the tide was right in so he couldn't get a good impression of the beach. I've got a book on Manawatu which concentrates mainly on PN and the pictures of the beach in that book look very nice.

There are a lot of bachs and holiday homes in a town near the sea (can't remember the name of it right now). But anyway the beach is accessible and not much of a drive away. Clapping

You're right Melissa - that was the name.

Dave said there was a good fish and chip shop there as well. This is more for the Brits rather than our American cousins. Laughing

We're flying out to PN for good on the 1st October.

Neil has a job offer in Hokuwhitu witha specialist orthodontic practice. We have a 3 year and are all really excited.

I'll post more when we arrive if you like?
