Hi
I am a NZ Citizen currently living in Amsterdam with my fiance (who is Dutch). We met about 14 months ago and in November we will move to
New Zealand where he will come out on a 9 month visitor visa and apply for residency once he is in NZ.
Has anyone's partner applied for residency without being legally married.
I have read the NZIS website and we qualify to apply for his residency but does it make it easier if we are legally married?
Also how long does the process take?
Thanks for your help |

Hi Lily
I'm English and my partner is a Kiwi, we're not married. It took about 5 months in the UK for my PR visa to come through. NZIS need you to prove you are in a permanent relationship and have been for for at least the last 12 months, so start collecting documentary proof as soon as possible.
Good luck,
John |

| Documentary proof means: joint bank account / mortgages, both names on utilities bills, any other agreement on which you are both listed, signed and dated photos of you looking like a 'stable and committed' couple, and if in doubt a statement from a professional person (teacher / doc / lawyer etc) confirming that they have known you as a couple for some time!! |

I'm married to a Kiwi and submitted my docs 3 weeks ago, along with stuff going back to '92. The staff only wanted stuff for the last 12 months; joint banks statements, wills, council tax, estimated time for decision 1-3 months. Got a letter back with 10 days being provisionally accepted said that were trying to catch up on back log. What helped was lots of joint stuff and he didn't need to chase up people for it, which he usually needs to and holds things up, especially if your not local to provide stuff. |
