Hi all
Just to let you know we have just successfully imported our two small dogs from the UK with no trouble thanks to Golden Arrow Shippers.
All we had to do was provide the dog's sizes and the cash. They did the rest, including providing detailed instructions for the vet along with all laboratory test kits. Carry cases were included and the pooches arrived in excellent condition despite one being rather old. The shippers provided air-conditioned transport from their lodgings in the UK to the kennels at heathrow too.
As long as you organise things well in advance (your dog needs a several tests over a period of a month prior to departure) importing animals to NZ is not as hard as reputed!
The cost was an eye-watering £1100 per dog. |

What a great report, Robert! So glad to hear that the little ones made it just fine, and your older one too. The shipping service sounds marvelous. We'll be shipping from Hawaii, so there will be no quarantine time, hooray, just loads of cash! What we won't do for our furry family friends! Thanks again, yours is the story I've been waiting to hear!

| Hi- I just PM'd SoCal Gal because I am also curious how she plans to use Hawaii- I just looked on the MAF website and it says animals have to reside in Hawaii for 6 months to be imported into NZ without quarantine. Would love to know if I am missing something because it would be great to avoid quarantine! |

I doubt there is anything being missed.
The six month quarrantine period is applied because it can take a very long time for rabies to develop in a dog (and similarly for a blood test to become positive).
I am sure that Hawaii would insist on a lengthy quarantine period in any case. The only question would be where you undergo quarrantine, rather than whether. |

Hi- no I never heard back, but I did look up the NZ MAF rules and it says it accepts pets from Hawaii without quarantine in NZ only if they were born in Hawaii or had lived there for 6 months (and of course have all the other requirements, like shots, etc, fulfilled).
So unless I'm missing something, you would have to have your pet go through the Hawaii quarantine and have them live there for 6 months before they could go into NZ. |

Hi Guys! Finally back from Hawaii, I'm not expecting any pity! But I do have loads of info about the pet quarantine thing....I went to the Animal Quarantine pick-up spot on the airport grounds (a little hard to find, we drove there) and as we were feeding the meter, a family walked out with three cat carriers. They had just picked up their pets who had flown over that day on Hawaiian airlines. They said that the paperwork process went very smoothly, and I could hear kitties meowing, so everyone seemed OK. I told them I had gotten a lot of info off the website www.hawaiiag.org/hdoa/ai_aqs_info.htm and they said it's also best to write ahead and get a packet of forms (which I was able to pick up at the quarantine center). These folks were moving to Hawaii from Southern California, and they said it took about 6 months to get everything situated. (From my readings, I think it could be accomplished in 4 months perhaps.) We went inside the facility, basically a large office, and when I walked in, the counter person asked if I was picking up a kitten or a bird, so apparently there were a few 'guests' still waiting! The gentleman at the counter was very, very helpful, gave me a packet and explained about the length of time between the two series of rabies shots. I was concerned about the three year and one year shots, and thougth that wa how long you had to wait in between, but he said no, animals can have 2 rabies shots three months apart, and that people do it all the time to get their animals moved on over. I have looked through the packet, and also called our local vet, turns out they prepare a lot of animals for moves to Hawaii, so basically it would be running through the check list. As far as pricing goes, the Hawaiian airlines website actually has pricing listed, so please check there for container shipment prices. Pricing is also provided on the earlier website mentioned. I'm thinking total costs may be about $500 per animal, but that is just my estimate. Now, on to New Zealand. I was not able to get a definite answer from the Hawaii quarantine people about some issues, such as 'when does the pet's residence in Hawaii start and how do I prove it?', they suggested I contact NZ quarantine about that. The gal I talked to at the NZ quarantine facility in Auckland did assure me a few months back that pets coming from Hawaii, where they had resided for 6 months previously, could come right in, no waiting. Whew, this is a lot of info I know, and now that I am back, I am more than happy to answer any other questions, either here or in a PM. Thanks for your patience, everyone, and hope this helps!
Aloha! |

One more thing, that I probably didn't make clear as I reread the posts above mine....if you meet the requirements (it's rabies shots things) your pet is actually released to you the day it gets to Hawaii! So, in the best case scenario, you would only have to live in Hawaii 1 day + 6 months before your pets could move freely to NZ. Only!! |
