|
|
We're on our way! Have successfully sold house in Scotland and are now squeeeeeeezed into my 1 bed flat in Sussex (4 bed into 1bed doesn't go!!).
Next step - get over to NZ - we plan to go in June for 1 month.
Would we be best going on "holiday" and looking for job for hubby (on POL / I.T)? If so, how soon could he start work considering we would be on a holiday visa - could we go to local immigration office with the job offer and get an instant work permit/visa ?
OR should we get to NZ on a work permit / visa? I think I heard that you can get on in person by going to the NZ embassy in London?
Any advice welcome!
Thanks

You can't get any sort of work visa without an offer of employment (if not on the POL, this also needs agreement with the Department of Labour). In this regard, it doesn't matter whether you turn at NZ House in person, or apply by post.
So without a job offer gained from the UK, going over "on holiday" is probably your best (only?) bet. I'm pretty sure that you can get a work visa in NZ after an offer has been made, but will need to make sure you take all your documentation over with you (E.g. qualification certificates, letters proving past experience, etc). Also worth getting police certificates done before you move as well. You'll also need medicals/X-rays done, but as they only last 3 months, best done over there.
But will they get a bit funny about you being over there supposedly on holiday, but turning up to apply for a work visa? Not exactly as if it happened by accident??!!

I have checked this out - it is NOT illegal to search for work in NZ whilst on a visitors visa - this info was gleaned from a helpful book I have called "Living and Working in New Zealand" and is written by emigration consultants.
Not going to advertise publishers but PM me if you want details. Assumedly you then can't be looked at suspiciously if you turn up with a visitors visa asking for a work permit!

well done, you will have read my pm to you by now moorf,
but just wanted to wish you all the best, and anyone else who is out there and wants to "GIVE IT GO"
remember, we live but once,so go do what your heart desire's.
in the future it is best to sit back and think to yourself "no matter what! we did our best, we had a go"
isn't that better than thinking "i wish i'd have tried that" and it's too late!
GO FOR IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I am going over in July to visit my sister-in-law and at the same time speculate. I have seen so many videos of places people have visited and I am enthralled just like everyone else.

Hi stallst
Since my last post our plans have changed! We have had a current work contract extended so are taking advantage of extra ££ and staying on here until September and then going over for 6 months instead of just one.
We feel we need this amount of time to ensure we can sort ourselves out, spend a few weeks travelling around and then settle into serious job hunting mode.

I wish you all the best. I know that you will succeed.
I am hoping that after a week or 2 of holidaying and tasting the local beer to get down to serious self-marketing.
Keep in touch.

| Just wanted to let you know that the NZIS in London actually advised us to travel out on a tourist visa, and then apply for our work permits once out there - and that it is totally legal to do so. We ended up in this situation by booking flights after accepting a job offer, but taking a lot longer to get the paperwork together for the work permits than we anticipated, and not wanting to risk sending off our passports to NZIS London 4 weeks before due to fly, especially with the 6-9 weeks processing time there. If you have a job offer before you go, but are applying for the work permit in NZ make sure you have all the paperwork you need (police certs, medical certs, any rego docs, any NZQA assessments, etc before you leave). I do believe that applying on the spot in NZ can take anything from 1 day to several weeks, depending on your case worker and how straigtforward your applicaiton is. Good luck in September! |

Thanks all!
3 weeks of work contract left - getting excited
Looking at flights c. 18 September - seen some good deals - so much so that we are thinking of treating ourselves and going business class
We're covering all angles with regards to jobs / visas - i.e. we shall put in an EOI near to our moving date, get all our docs/certs together and take them with us, contacting prospective employers prior to departure, same with recruitment agencies, etc etc !!
DESSERT PARTY - can't be missed!! Do you do banoffee out there

Hi
Almost wish I was going to live in Chch - would love to meet up with the regulars on the forum. It's just like one big happy (confused) family. Maybe I can pop down from Palmerston North, if I ever get there. Dave has said come on down - he is loving work and people. House is now on the market - waiting for first viewers
