Hi all,

Just working through the list of what to bring out. We have some good BT cordless phones, will they and the phone jacks work in NZ. Also a BT ADSL modem, will this work with NZ Broadband or would I automatically get one when I set up a Broadband connection in NZ?

Cheers

Hi Dione,

Also have nice cordless BT phones and they work fine over here. No need for any alterations just plug them straight into phone point.

We brought our ADSL Modem with us but the fastest broadband over here is 250ish not 512 like in UK (apparently). So we went for a 2k speed through www.paradise.net.nz so had a DSL line fitted so dont need ADSL modem and could have left it for family. Might be handy to decide before leave UK but hard as DSL not available everywhere.

Hope that has not confused you more.

Thanks Lauren

What is the performance of the 2K DSL line like? I'll be working from home and will need a fairly good connection speed. I'll be in Auckland which I'm pretty sure has most options available.

Cheers

Hi Dione
We have Paradise 2Mb BB (not 2K as my Wife, Lauren, wrote) as part of a Triple package with Telstraclear (Telstraclear is Cable TV, Phone and Internet with the Internet server called Paradise). They supply a modem and connect it either by Network Interface Cable (if your PC has the provision) or via USB. The whole system was installed and setup by an Engineer for no extra costs. We chose the package as ADSL (Broadband) is only at 256Kb and we wanted to progress from 512, which is what we had in the UK. I have to say that it is very impressive and if you wanted to run a business with it, you would have no problems. You have the choice of Data Transfer packages. We have 1Gb per month with blocks of 100Mb Pay As You Go after that but you can opt for 2 or even 10Gb, obviously for more/month.
You have to rent the modem off Telstra as it's a DSL modem. I brought an ADSL modem before we left the UK exactly for the purpose of BB but it is now redundant.
It would pay you to look into where the above service is available because as you go further out of the City (we're in Chch) the less likely a connection will be available and 256 ADSL will probably be your only option. You can use your own Modem if you chose 256 BB.
Hope this helps.

I heard rumours of a wireless network offering internet access in Auckland (zoom?). You could consider this as it may provide you a very flexible option, especially if you need to be up and running quickly while looking for property to rent.

Roberto/Robert

Thanks for the info. Will have a look into this all a bit further. We'll be in Akl and I will be working from home so the Paradise option sounds pretty good.

Cheers

Dione Nice One
