Are there any cities / towns that should be avoided when considering a move to NZ.
In England, most of the Major Cities have areas that should be avoided due to high crime, drugs and gang culture. Typically house prices determine the area, but I know my wife would be immediately put off if we happened upon the wrong area.
I am favouring a move to either Christchurch or Northland (Whangarei) but would appreciate any input. Would prefer residential to rural. |

Well, Ayjayoh21, as far as Christchurch goes, I only know a little.
I lived in St Albans for a while. It was nice and close to the centre, and seemed to be a nice area. It is close to the park and golf course - which I had to walk across to get to work in Riccarton, which also seemed like a nice area. Christchurch is generally quite nice - good shops, places to eat (very nice souvlaki takeaway on Columbo Street - Cathedral End ), have fun etc. It is also reasonably close to lots of great things - Hamner Springs is fun, Akaroa, even Kaikora isn't that far away. Don't be fooled by the promise of a nice pier in New Brighton, though - it's not quite Eastborne
Cities/towns in general - I personally wouldn't want to go back to Westport or Greymouth on the west coast Invercargill also lacked a certain something. And Palmerston North really didn't push any buttons.
Northland seemed nice, but I only spent a limited amount of time there. Nice weather.
Please, however, bear in mind that I come from Birmingham...
Anyway, wherever you choose, I hope all goes well for you and NZ lives up to your expectations.
