hi everyone

My hubby has a job offer in Auckland and we were looking at house prices. schools etc but i dont really know where to start.
We have 3 children all boys 8 16 19.

Auckland seems a bit pricey but don't know areas around. Would it be better to rent first or buy. Help, any advice.

Hi Pat,

Your best place to start would be a book called "Where to Live in Auckland" (funnily enough). Stick in the title into Google and the authors have a website where you can order it. Has reams of general information about each suburb in Auckland including house prices, ethnical data, commuting times, school zones, population change, shopping, lifestyle, locals...the works!
Auckland has lots of suburbs, many of them very different from each other. In general, where you live will be determined by
a) Where can you afford to live?
b) What sort of lifestyle are you looking for?
c) Where is hub's work, and so how far could he hack commuting?

I know Auckland quite well from previous visits so by all means PM me with any question...but not as well as Karl the Oracle who is living there now so he is probably your best bet when you've got specific questions!

Most people would recommend renting for a few months first to get a feel for the place before taking the plunge to buy. Problem is...good quality rentals are hard to come by. Perhaps a recce might be in order!!

Hey Graham, how did you manage to get the advert for the very web page you were talking about, right next to your post?
