Hi Everyone,

Have been in turmoil for ages now about the best way to approach getting to NZ, however the new rules have changed things for the better as I see it.

Previously to get in I needed at least an HNC type qualification to get enough points (my career is in telecom sales), however having a family I would have probably wanted to get a job lined up anyway as well.

Now if I go there for a visit and get a job offer I will get 130 points, and that is if it is in Auckland. If I go put in an EOI and spend a year at least and £1,500 getting an HNC, but no job offer I only get 105 points!

Strikes me that with them looking at the pool firstly by total points and also if you have a job offer, that this is the way to go.

Or am I wrong? (Wouldn't be the first time!) All thoughts and comments welcome.

Hi Alan,

The way I read the new rules is that, depending on the job you go for, there is still a minimum qualification the NZIS requires before it will pass you for a work-permit for that particular job - this is the case for jobs on the POL and OSL. (Tell me if i'm wrong someone).

I think that is definately true, but trying to decipher what the exact requirements of the qualifications is a little confusing to me.

Are the requirements for bonus points on the EOI the same as the requirements for immigration? Namely, do IT positions require a degree? So confusing... Nutcase

I would agree with you if it were a straight work permit, however I should have clarified that I am talking about Permanent Residence. A job offer secures more points than the qualification, and with something like an HNC you would still require the job offer to get a good amount of points.

I did however consider a Work to Residence route with an approved company which also does not appear to require specific qualifications as such.

If someone does a Work to Residence are they still able to apply for Residence within the 2 years?
