hi all,

Reading recently about the flooding in certain areas of NZ Confused

I was particularly interested in the Palmerston North areas such as Feilding and surrounding areas. This is where I am hoping to move to.

Is this common? I hear on the news that its 'once every 40 years or so' hmm not sure about that.
Is it common to flood but not to this extent?

Lastly, although it sounds a little mercenary, do you think it will bring the property prices down in these areas?

If anyone reading this has been affected by the floods, then good luck in the following few weeks. Having been flooded in the past in the UK, its no fun. (but a good chance to get that new guitar etc.. from the insurance company!!!) cool

Hi Carl

I was interested to hear about the flooding in Palmerston, we are also planning to move out there once we get our visas sorted.

There are some pictures of the floods on the following link
www.pncc.govt.nz/City/News/FloodPhotos.htm

some of the photos look quite bad it would be interesting to hear how bad it has been.

Hi Carl,

Most areas of New Zealand can have much more intense rain storms than anywhere in the UK. The most intense storms come from the north and are the remants of tropical storms (hurricanes). These are fairly rare - we are talking decades - but the North Island and Upper South Island get the worst of it. The east of the lower South Island (Canterbury and Otago) usually doesn't get it so bad.

Hi

We have just emigrated to NZ from UK (Nottingham) and are living in Palmerston North.

We couldn't believe all the rain in February! Everybody here is saying how unusual the weather has been and that is the worst Summer anyone can remember. Apparently the flooding is the worst it has been for over 100 years. Palmerston North itself was pretty unscathed but the certain areas of the surrounding towns of Ashurst and Fielding were more badly affected. I think it is very unusual for this to happen so I would just suggest that when house hunting not to buy to near a river or stream (which you would probably think of doing in UK too).

Palmerston North is a good sized town with plenty of facilities. It is away from the tourist track but in some ways this makes it a better place to actually live. If you want any more advice or details on Palmerston please post on the website or send a mail.
