Two questions if anyone can answer them...
1. Does previous work experience have to be relevant to the job offer you are claiming points for and the qualification you are claiming points for.
2. I have children and have generally worked part time. My present job is 22 hours per week. If I did that job for 3 years could I claim 3 years of "30 hours" (ie. pro rata the hours) or would I need to have done the job for 4 years. What about freelance work where i didn't have fixed hours on my contract (but worked bloody hard and very long hours!)

Sorry, 3rd question....
What if you don't have minimum of 2 full time years work experience in one field - will they tell you to take a hike or do you just not get points for that one and hope the employer sees the relevance of all of the work you have done (my prior work is all over the place in the voluntary sector which is really diverse and not like a specific profession)

Thanks folks...

Hi Charley,

Previous experience has to be related to the qualifications you have and the job that you are going for, or rather to the skills category you want to enter under. If you don't have the experience you won't get the points, although with an offer you may not need them. The hours, as far as I am aware, can not be "pro rata", they consider full time employment as over 30 per week and the experience has to be full time.

With regards to less than 2 years affecting their decision, as I've said above I think it will only mean that you'll get less points. A bigger problem will be securing a job over there without experience, which you'll almost certainly need to do if you can't claim the points for experience. A bit of a chicken and egg one really. Hmmm

Does your partner have points or will you be the main applicant?

Charley, if you're claiming points for a job offer it can be relevant to one or the other, so you could have an unrelated degree (& still get the points for it) with the job being relevant to the work exp.

Also the work exp can be part-time, have a look at the EOI guide on the NZIS site (here's a snippet)
Credit for part-time work experience may be given on a proportional basis.
Example: Four years work experience for 15 hours per week is equal to 2 years work experience for a 30-hour week,
and therefore qualifies for one point.

Don't know how yours works out...me maths ain't much good!

Thanks Guys, I had seen the bit about 15 hours for 4 years being equivalent to 2 yrs full time, but wonder whether my 22 hours for 3 years be equivalent to 2 years full time (or would i still be expected to do 4 years....but then what about people who have done 29 hrs per week!)
I guess it's one of those things that you find out when you apply. The issue about freelance/contract work is a difficult one. i have loads of experience in my field i could argue, but it's not measurable in hours (just in sweat and lost sleep)
Cheers, Charley
