Hi Again!
When arriving in NZ would it be best to find property to buy asap (renting whilst looking) - I see that the property prices are on the up so even buying a "stop gap" apartment seems logical.
Am I missing something or are there other reasons not to buy asap?
Cheers

| I'd definitely rent even if it's just for 2 or 3 months. You'll learn so much more about where the best places to live are. Worst think you could possibly do imho is rush into a property purchase in a new country. What you'll learn in 3 months about choosing the right house will more than make up for $1,000 or so in price rises. Plus a lot of people here reckon that house prices are going to stop going up because of interest rate rises and a fall in immigrants. |

Thanks for that info .... we are thinking along the same lines - i.e. rent for a while then buy - although I must admit we aren't that well informed on the property market in NZ - we heard that prices where we are looking (ChCh / Dunedin) were zooming up in value.
Can u recommend a good site where we can investigate?
Cheers

hi, not sure if you are asking about a good property website or one that is giving info on current price trends.
If its the former then www.realenz.co.nz is a good starting point and if its the later just use the NZ news sites www.xtramsn.co.nz and www.nzherald.co.nz as they seem to give a reasonabley accurate forecast of the way the market is. hope that helps regards Veronica
PS just remember when looking at the pictures on the real estate sites they use wide angle lenses so well it almost can be catergorised as trick photography. |

That's dead right Veronica. We turned up to view a good few houses that were a disappointment in the flesh compared with the photos we'd seen. |

Hi All
We're immigrating in May (Work Visa, not PRV but better than not moving!).
We were fortunate enough to find a "holiday home" for rent. Usually the owners rent it out by the weekend or week, but since it's winter they were more than happy to oblige us for three months. Likely it would have stood empty most of the time, so they were keen on getting us in...even negotiated a decent rent. And it happens to be a nice, new home...fully furnished w/linens, dishware, etc...3 bedrooms and all!
So we'll have a nice place to live while we get settled, have a look around for a place of our own and wait for our belongings to drift over the seas to our doorstep.
We've found that if you make a decent offer and show the local people that you're sincere, they'll bend over backward for you. (The holiday homeowner even went so far as to rent us a post office box!)
So the next time you're getting frustrated with the NZIS ...just remember what the real people of Godzone are like! |
