|
|
Hi All, My husband and I are moving to Wellington in Oct/Nov from Australia. We will only be there for 2 years so don't really want to buy a house. Only problem is we have two dogs. My question is: How difficult is it to find a house to rent that will allow pets? We want something nice, but most of the houses I have seen on the web indiciate no pets. Would it be possible to negotiate on this - e.g. We would be willing to pay an additional bond against the dogs. They are very well trained and behaved - much more than the two kids. I can never understand why people are so worried about pets when kids can destroy a house in 2 minutes!
Any experiences or comments would be greatly appreciated. |

| Good question, I hope someone may add if the same is possible for the Aukland area. I can testify to the fact that my 2 year old turns our home into a war zone in 15 minutes, DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

We said we`d pay for carpet cleaning as well as an extra bond and had no trouble renting with our springer spaniel.

| Our landlord wasn't bothered at all, but the house we are renting is not in a condition where damage is an issue.... |

How do you find rentals that allow pets? Are there any decent online lists of rentals?
I've checked out various real estate sites (Harcourts, propertystuff, realenz, some others I can't remember offhand), and the rental listings are quite limited. None of the sites I've tried allow you to narrow your search to pet-friendly rentals, and very few of the rentals listed on those big sites allow pets. |

Coastcat - I will second that...for the most. www.ljhooker.co.nz allow you search for rentals where pets are allowed, but I just did one for the whole of Wellington and came up with 0 properties. I'm thinking I will just have to wait till we get there and approach real estate agents directly. We are really taking a punt cause the dogs are not-negotiable and if we can't find something to rent we might have to buy which we don't want to do at the height of the market. I will post my experiences when we get there.
Cheers... |

Being here now and dealing with NZ rental agents my advice would be to talk to them direct - either by email or phone and tell them what you are looking for. You can waste an awful lot of time trawling through the websites, when they know the properties and the owners pretty well. LJ Hooker, Harcourts and The Professionals are some of the biggest ones around. Friends here have told us that renters wth dogs are v unpopular with landlords out here and that they have had reall trouble finding somewhere in the past (sorry!), so I think talking direct with an agent and getting them on the case is your best option. Hell you have to pay them a fee anyway so make them work for it!
Best of luck, R |
