Hi all,
I may be Joining the RNZAF. I have the officer selection board in wellington in april all being well.
I am after some information on service life there. I have visited the airforce sites etc but particularly I am interested in the service housing standards etc...
any info or links would be appreciated.
PS I have 13 years telecoms experience, particularly in Mobile rollouts, if you happen to be a telecommunications operator reading this, I am available for work!!!
Regards
Carl |

Hi Carl. Welcome to the forum.
Hopefully someone here will know more than I do about the RNZAF.
I guess you'll already have read that Telecom Engineers and Technicians are on the NZIS Occupational Shortage List, so you're probably in a pole position from an immigration point of view from the word go.
Are you hoping to work anywhere in particular?

Hi JCM, thanks for the welcome.
I have been thinking of moving over to NZ for a few years now and in recent weeks I have suffered the same problem as other subscribers to this forum - the job offer (or lack of it).
Having 9 years previous military experience (telecoms) I applied to join the RNZAF. I received a good response and have been invited to attend an officer selection board in April in Wellington. I dont mind doing my bit for a country which provides me with a better life. (Its a pity not everyone thinks like this when they enter the UK!!)
The new points system seems to come in force next month and I think a job offer will certainly be a prerequisite. From what I understand of the new process, one may qualify for an invitation to apply for residency (scoring over 100 points) but they will only choose the candidates who are at the highest end of the dream pool.
As for location, we have an open agenda and will move anywhere in NZ (if it doesn't suit then we can always move can't we). The wife is planning on studying nursing over there too having just completed her access to nursing here in the UK.

Hi Carl,
There are varying opinions on whether a job offer will be a prerequisite. Put simply, the NZIS may not meet its targets if it only grants residence to people with job offers. So it may be that some people will get residence without a job. The NZIS are playing their cards very close to their chest. In the past, the Operations Manual told you precisely how they judged applicants. Now it appears they are keeping some information back so the process will be less transparent. The implication is that the system will be stacked in favour of people coming from what the NZIS regards as 'similar labour market' countries to New Zealand. We are left to ourselves to judge which countries this will include. I don't think it's too difficult to make some educated guesses. I suppose we'll discover over the next few weeks and months how the system will work in practice and whether a transparent system will develop. If I were you, I'd still be optimistic rather than pessimistic.
p.s. It's a pity your wife wasn't already a nurse Carl. The NZIS would roll out the red carpet for you instantly. |
