What are the chances of picking up my beloved L.A Lakers via satelite?
Or my wifes soaps for that matter.
Not that her missing soaps would be all that tragic, the carpet might get vacuumed once in a while. |

I'm afraid that seems to be a forlorn hope.
Check out www.sky.co.nz for full details of their programming schedule. You will find the range to be far less than that offered in the US or UK.

As much as I would have guessed,
dare to dream or so they say. I had run a search engine for tivo devices in n.z and had seen an offer for satelite with 5000 channels, akin to the monster satelites that first imergered in the us in the 80's. But you can never really trust all you read. Maybe I will be able to pick it up on the web someday. thanks for the post -jay |

Hi Justin,
Welcome aboard!
Can you post the satellite info you found? We're moving in May and I haven't been able to come up with much more than SKY TV and some other info on smaller cable providers.
P.S. I have some info on NZ TiVo if you'd like. I have a couple of Series 1's I've hacked and am preparing them for Kiwi TV. (No one's hacked a Series 2...yet!) |

Hi there, a google search for n.z satelite lead me to a thing called FTA or free to air reception of satelite service. I have sent an email to a place called hookt.v that claims you can adjust the angle of you satelite to receive different programs.
If you recall the eight to ten foot giant sattelites that first immerged, they could scan the sky to pick up different signals. I will post the e-mail reply when I get it. It sounds as if it could be the same thing.
By the Way you are leaving in May, how exciting. Someone said at our diner table about two months ago, "HEY LETS MOVE TO NEW ZEALAND!!!!" expecting us to laugh. We all just looked at each other and went, hey maybe we should. I have spent the next 60 days asking my self ," GEE its seems almost dumb not to."
How did you guys pull the trigger so to speak. I own my own small buisness, I never thought I'd leave it, but considering that the traffic, quality of life, schools ect in CA. It seems like life is yelling out to me," JUSTIN WAKE UP AND MOVE!!!" What was your first step. Justin |

| The satelite Co. called back and said that it is extremely difficult, which of course means that it is some how possible, I guess. He also stated that they are working on making this happen, but was vague as to the details. I would assume that eventually high speed internet should factor in down the line. I will keep digging to see what I can find. justin |

I have done some more searching, on this subject and the obvious has occured to me. The satelites that we receive a signal from are geo-stationary.
Meaning they don't move. And seeing as our earth is an orb, the bulge of the equator will then effecitvely block all signals originating in the north.
We are doomed, our only chance is the internet. We should write to our service providers to see if they would broadcast on the internet for a fee.
I am not an IT guy, but I am wonder if there are probalby to many hang ups with the modern system, bandwidth ect...
My guess is that we will have to wait 10 years, for a faster version of the internet made available to the public.
There is one in existance, but it is reserved for government and research facilities only |

In a bold a suprsing move the FCC in America approved Tivo co. request that information stored on a Tivo unit should be transferable between up to nine seperate Tivo units over the internet.
So I buy two units here in America, give one to my brother, take the other one to New Zealand, hook it up to the internet and down load all of my favorite programs.
It may take me 10 hours to download the Sopranos, but hey I still get the sopranos |

Hi Justin,
Being a bit techy here, but if the TV satellite is geostationary, it means it must be situated over the equator, not directly over middle of North America (circular orbit, centripetal forces...means anywhere else would be unstable because gravitational attraction between Earth and satellite would not be towards centre of its orbit).
Therefore, you MAY still get a signal from the satellite in NZ...but it wouldn't depend on the "bulge of the orb", rather how specifically directioned (grammar?) the satellite was. As such satellites are in orbit 36,000 km away, it is very unlikely that line-of-sight to NZ will be a problem; so not impossible.... ...rather unlikely so worth checking before discarding the idea. |

Graham, you got the satelite part right. For this to work,m my brother in the U.S would receive the signal. His Tivo would connect to his computer there is a usb port on the Tivo.
From there I would be able to log onto his computer/tivo from a remote source(new zealand) and upload all of its digital contents.
A form of peer to peer sharing. The "catch" is that you only supposed to share with yourself. The FCC has tentatively agreed to all0w you to share the t.v broadcasts with up to nine different Tivo locales
I beleive that the U.K has tivo which should mean that if the U.K follows suit Y'all should be able to follow your local U.K programs in N.Z
This development is revolutionary, you may not know or Tivo, but it is the Greatest thing that has happened to T.V since well T.V
With it you never will watch a commercial again, it pauses live t.v and lets you record two live programs at the same time. I never have to tell the Misses, hush just a second this part is important. You just hit the pause button.
So you see this really has broad implications. Say HELLO TIVO
