Hi all, can anybody help us with a question we need answers to.

We are moving to Christchurch in November and have a son who will be 13 in November and a daughter who will be 11 in December.

Can anybody tell us if we were to get them into a school in January next year when the school year starts what school year they would each be in?

Also we understand zoning is very important with regards to school can anybody tell us how we find out about catchment areas for any schools we are interested in, would it be a case of having to contact each particular school or can we find this out anywhere on the web.

Many thanks. Tina.

Hi Fern,

Your daughter will join a Yr 7 class at the very end of January. She will be eligible to attend an intermediate school or full primary school in Yrs 7 and 8.

Your son will join a Yr 9 class, the first year of high school.

Some schools show their zoning on their websites. e.g. Burnside High School. If they don't, you'll have to phone the individual schools:

Burnside website:

Burnside enrolment info (including zone maps):

I had a friend relief teach at Kaiapoi...a wee bit rough...although the area in the whole is getting better with a lot more houses being built there, a few years back it was where the single mothers were put into council houses....(those kids are now at high school) not having a go...as I was a single mum for a while...it is just a fact

Rangiora is a nice area. The school can be a little unfriendly to immigrants....(again just from personal experiences) as the kids have all been to primary school, then high school, hang out together in the town (as there is not much to do there) and may take a while to click with the kids.

I would take a good look when you get here, and check out how they deal with bullies, drugs etc and also make sure their school board (made up of parents) are doing what they are suppose to be doing, and that they have employed teachers (the school board chooses) that are superb etc. Do it for any school you decide to send your kids to.....one school has 4 security guards to keep the kids IN CLASS!!!

good luck... (now I have completely freaked you out!) Nutcase
