Are there any good / recommended scuba diving areas around NZ?
Anyone with experience?

Hi Moorf and All
My wife and I are also avid divers...one of the reasons we're moving to NZ. We'd also appreciate any info about diving there. Heard it's a bit chilly though...5 to 7 mil wet suits are the norm...and hoods...brrrrrr!
We've been diving with the Aggressor Fleet in nearby Fiji. (Airfare is pretty reasonable from NZ.) Fiji is without a doubt some of the best diving we've ever experienced! Not only is the water warm, but the fish and coral are beyond belief...even got to pet a couple of sharks! Outstanding...highly recommended!
Let's get wet!  |

Hi there
Haven't actually done any diving around NZ but research shows it's gonna be good ... Poor Knights Marine Reserve is the number one I think, one of hte best in the world. There are also various locations around the coast, most of which are boat dives but also some shoer and snorkelling sites too. Looking forward to White Island - live volcanoe, where dive gear cannot be left uncovered as the volcanic ash corrodes it so badly!!! Lonely PLanet have a wee dive guide which is informative as is the Diving branch on the Thorn Tree (Message board on the Lonely Planet website). HTH |

Hi Moorf,
Theres some lovelly diving in NZ, some of the best in the world. My favourite place is the Poor Knight Islands near the Bay of Islands there are also some great wrecks e.g. The Rainbow Warrior and the Mickael Lermentoff (russian liner) experienced divers only its claimed many lives with peolple getting lost and running out of air.
Some great scallop beds are also to be had to finish the day off and if you know where to go some lovelly crays to slap on the Barbie! Add to that loads of marine reserves and you are spolit for choice really!
ENJOY |

You can arrange dive trips from any dive shop try these for starters;
Kaikoura for seals, sperm whales, dolphins, crays, sponges, sea stars and many different variaties of fiish
Motunau Reef
Banks Peninsular especially damons bay and pompey's pillar also Akoroa Harbour.
You will definately enjoy these!

| My boyfriend and I are also scuba fanatics. We are both PADI-certified divemasters and my boyfriend is a scuba repair technician. He currently works at a shop in Beverly Hills and, while we are very much going to miss our CA diving, we are also very much looking forward to some NZ diving. We have heard that NZ diving is like CA diving on steroids. Can't wait. The temp will not be a problem for us as we are used to it as we do most of our diving on the Channel Islands and from shore anywhere from Ventura to San Diego. Wouldn't it be fun to have an ex-pat dive club in NZ? If interested, send me contact info and once I make it to NZ (probably January 2005), I'll start putting it together. We'll be in Palmerston North. Good luck everyone, and happy diving! |
