Hi Folks,
Sorry I know this has come up before, same question but different angle. So just wondering if anyone can clarify.
In general, are there any benefits in applying under skilled migrant as opposed to WTR?
My partner has recently recieved a job offer, the company have assumed that we are applying under work to residence, and have sent contract etc with this in mind, but we would rather apply as skilled migrants (he has 150 points with the job offer). Is there any difference in job offers under WTR and job offers for skilled migrant? One way or the other, my partner is likely to go over to NZ with our two younger children in the first instance, whilst I stay here with the older two till the eldest has finished his A's (next June) we then aim to follow him over. As you know, under skilled migrant we would already be on my partners visa, but, but with work to residence, as I understand, I will have to make an independant application, with the children going on visitors visa - is this right? In this case it seems more expensive to go under WTR and maybe more risky as we are not married and I don't have a job offer. (I currently get 105 points on skilled migrant without job offer)
Also do we have to pay for kids schooling/medic etc under WTR?
Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I am hoping someone will have the answers and take pity, before we pay money over and then find we have done it wrong!
Cheers - H |

Hi H. Yes - since you have children, with SMC you are eligible to claim family benefits (cash) if your joint income isn't high. Also PR is just that - permanent. You are permanent residents from day 1 regardless of what happens at work.

A job offer is a job offer. With WTR, provided your partner doesn't lose their job, you will automatically get PR in two years time. If you can qualify for SMC immediately, I would go down this route preferably simply because PR is more secure than WTR. That is presuming you have enough points to qualify for PR right away, which you certainly appear to.

Provided you can demonstrate a stable relationship, you will be eligible to accompany your partner under either of the schemes.

No, you will just need to get for student visas for them. These will be issued without a problem if your partner has a work visa.
Hope that helps. |

Hi Rodders,
For WTR you either need to get a job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer or you need to get a job offer that's on the Priority Occupations List. To the best of my knowledge, there's no problem if the job drops off the POL once you've got the visa. |

Quick check,
partners job is on the occ short list for Auckland , but is no longer highlighted. Does this mean, as I suspect, that it is no longer accepted as an occupational shortage job
So, we can claim points for the job offer (company are accredited), but can not claim points for it being on the occupational shortages list?
cheers - H
getting used to these smilies!! |
