Hi all just found this forum and must say very useful.

My wife and myself are hoping to move to NZ hopefully later this year. I will have a job lined up either in south or in the North but we are so not sure on what part of NZ to live in. We both don't really want to live in the cites so rather live on the outside as we are so use to living in a village where we are now and plus we want are space (some small land would be nice).

So any body know any nice small areas to live in, dont mind if the neighbours are living a mile apart or a metre away Smile just need ideas.

cheers

South island is tops. I live in South Canterbury, and in a small town (Temuka) its the same size as the village we lived in the UK. The beach is only 10 mins away and the mountains are only 45 mins away. The scenery is beautiful when driving home from work on a clear day seeing all the mountains in the back ground. Also you get a lot for money if your buying property around South Canterbury.

Hi Obe,
I think I'm right in saying that carp are viewed as an absolute pest in NZ Eek . Shame, as I like carp fishing too, but would be more than prepared to give that up if it meant we could live in NZ!

I think you are right about Carp being viewed as pests Bill. However, dont go ditching the tackle just yet. You could still have some brilliant sport with carping gear for light sea work. The guy we stayed with told me he uses quite similar gear for some boat fishing, as it really connects you with your catch. I only managed one (tiny) snapper and an even smaller unknown fish when I had a go with some borrowd tackle, but they fight like little devils.
By the way, did you know that you are not allowed to buy or sell trout in NZ? You have to catch your own. Strange eh?

Hi Tim,
Tried sea fishing a couple of times, didn't get sea sick or anything like that, just knew it wasn't for me. I don't even like fishing rivers, streams or canals. Personally, I don't think there's anything more relaxing or rewarding than float fishing a small pond / lake at about 3am on opening day with the mist rising and spotting a raft of tench bubbles.....heaven.
Interesting about the trout, didn't know that. I may be tempted to go trouting, more skillful I reckon than sea fishing......ok ok, shoot me down then, all you seasoned sea fishers, I can handle it!

I couldnt agree more with your sentiments on opening day Bill. Unfortunately it is not a widely held view in uk these days, since commercial factors took over most of our fisheries and open the doors year round on the pretence of "all method trout fishing".
I just checked out the site suggested by Rob p. Very interesting to see at least some course fishing available. Must not forget about fumigation of tackle on importation though.
In my humble opinion, catching trout is as difficult as you want to make it. I.E if you cheat and use regular bait fishing instead of flys, you increase catch rate. As you can see, I am not a purist.
Also interesting to learn that Koi are wild in some areas. These must be either escapees or fish that have been released illegally, as I cant see NZ importing them for sporting purposes. I reckon with the climate over there, the carp in general are probably quite sizeable. Could be a niche market to exploit, it worked in France and they used to eat any carp caught.
Any other keen course (I hate that term) anglers out there want to share views?

Looks like we have gone off on a slight tangent here. Maybe we should start new topic to cover the fishing on its own. Embarassed

Unfortunatly for me I had all my fishing tackle nicked out of my garage about 4 weeks ago. Sad .......Good news is the insurance co replaced it all, even managed to get some fly fishing gear thrown in, so now I`ve got loads of brand new tackle to take with me. Smile

I`m heading for in 2 weeks time Hamilton so as soon as the tackle arrives it will be down to the waikato river to give it a test run.
