gge = garage
    osp = probably off-street parking
    dbl = double-car garage
    sng = single-car garage
    no = presumably you're stuck parking on the street

bath - okay, I'm mystified by this one - maybe it's whether or not there's more than one bathroom?

age = approximate decade when built

w/w = whiteware (appliances) included

pets = yes, no, cats only

fence = full, partial, none

Sorry, weekly. We dont usually do monthly....It depends how you are paid and what suits you. Most people are weekly or fortnightly. The prices you see in the paper on the web sites are always weekly.

Thanks people, I thought it was a bit too much of a good thing. My wife, Liz, and I are planning to go over to NZ Feb/Mar next year for a month to take a look around. Hawkes bay or Christchurch (probably the former) any pointers as to itineraries would be appreciated. We’re both in early fifties (very) and it’s a bit pie-in-the-sky wish to get in. Our son & DOL are moving to Melbourne at the end of this year so an alternative route might just exist there. fingers crossed

It's possible to rent a lot cheaper than that too. $150 a week is possible if you find a small place, but for a good quality/price compromise I'd go for the $250 range. I flatted in a Christchurch house in 2000. The weekly rental was $210 split 3 ways. I could live of $140 a week if I was careful.

This last 6 mths have seen rents go a little higher than 2000!

$250 these days will get you a 2/3 bed in aranui...it has changed a lot since you were last here.
They are still dirty and cold though, I am sure that hasnt changed!!

Didn't know that. I've seen places advertised online for the prices I gave but I really can not comment on quality. I've been promised a possible 2 bdrm in Nelson for $150 and since buying in Nelson is a little more expensive than CHCH these days I assumed renting in ChCh would be the same as renting in Nelson. Dad tells me that there are a lot of flats advertised in the Nelson mail. Good time to be a tenant; bad time to be a land lord.

I'll be flying home either this year in Dec or Dec 2005. I plan to qualify as a highschool teacher (a one month diploma course) and then teach in NZ for the duration. We are trying hard to save up our pennies now to get a decent deposit on a home. We already will have about 20k NZD but want to get 40k. Hopefully house prices will come down a little in the next few years!
