Hi,
I need some help in deciding the best place to live in New Zealand. I lived there for a year about 7 years ago with my family but I dont really remember about the different places.
I am a 20yr old male w/o a girlfriend and all that other tie me down stuff. I currently run my own business designing software, CAM/CAD contracting, IT consulting and I try and bring new business to the shops that contact me out. So this leaves me very flexible because I do all this from my computer at home.
I would like to try and start up a prototype pcb shop in New Zealand because I hear the market is only growing and very few quick turn shops to cover it without going overseas...
Back to the point, if anyone could please suggest some good spots for a guy like me in New Zealand, I would greatly appreciate it. I can afford up to $400.00 a week rent and need to have a house that is not suburbea. I will be moving out this coming Feb., if that matters.

mmm, really depends what you like when you are not shut up in your house working?

surfing? skiing? eating out? theatre? movies? arts?

Do you like lots of people around? or the smell of a city? or country smells...moo! $400 would get you a mansion in timaru, but a studio/1 bed in Auckland. When I was 20 I was happening (yeah, right) and I liked clubs..still do! so living up a mountain wasnt for me.

Good luck (lucky you!!)

When not bent up I rock/ice climb, hike, camp. But, I like the city because of all the happening things to do. The place I stay can be just outside a city, like 5 minutes or so. Thank you for your help!

Sounds like chch might be the place!

Rock climbing up on the port hills, absailing down them, hang gliding off them, tramping up them...live near sumner, and you have the city 15 mins away, and the surf at your door. (or brighton...bit cheaper...but not much happening there...more at sumner, like the movies, restaurants..pubs)

Lots of homestays out there (rent a room from a family, they cook/clean up after you,) and it is about $100 a week or flat share...about $70 a week.

What is the best way to find out about home shares and flats. I have found a couple places, but none with enough pictures to tell if it nice or not. Also, what are the going rates of local hotels?

I dont know about on line, but the best place is 'The Press' newspaper (try www.stuff.co.nz) they have all our newspapers on line...might not have the 'to lets' though

Hotels are about $200 a night, motels about $80-$100 a night

see www.wotif.com
for last minute (as in 2 weeks at a time) deals for accomm in NZ.

I would probably stay in a B&B to begin with (some pick you up from the airport..I can give you the web sites for b&b's email me at my free net addy) and then get the paper and start ringing once here.

If you need any help, just email. Happy to help

(will only cost you some galaxy/quality street!...if you are American..you wont know what I am talking about)

Thinking laterally - how about Queenstown?

From a nightlife point of view it is more happening than probably all the cities in NZ, and you are right in the middle of the outdoors. And there is plenty to do, its a bit too hedonistic really, but great for you young ones.

Otherwise Christchurch or Dunedin are probably the best placed cities for the mountains, but Auckland might be best for generating business.

There is always a way to make money, specially working from home. It is my feeling that I would rather be happy in a place than make money, hence the move to NZ.

I didn't know that Queenstown was a good place for the younger generation. Is there any way you might be able to elaborate on things to do there? or point me in the right direction for information Last I was there, it was mostly outdoorsy type with a smaller, less happening than say Denedin. But that was several years ago Hmmm .

What about Wellington? It seems like a nice place and very cosmo, which is my style.

Anyway, thank you for the continued help on this. I am looking at a moving date of Dec. 3, 2004. And a bit off the topic but I am looking for a good way to meet people down there. I was thinking working at a coffee shop or similar part time just to meet people... any suggestions? Confused Confused
