Uhoh wow, kiwi - that was most uplifting!
no, seriously, good info .... we're IT'er like Moorf and Man - and chch might be our first ticket as well .... (god, are rentals really that bad??) - well, i don't mind giving a new home a good bath, that's good practice anywhere...it's the bugs i wouldn't want - like cockroaches - yeiks!! No

(our house in the mountains had black widow spiders, centipedes, and scorpions .....learned to live with them... but certain roaches are too disgusting, especially when they come UP the pipes from the sewer .....

but not in nz, right? Mr. Green

I have not seen a roach in chch, but I hear they are in Auck.

We have the odd spider, but nothing like the huntsman in oz..size of your hand...

I think you will be fine sesame, after what you have lived with...yukko!!!

Helen, if you are working, with 12 k in the bank...laughing...drinks are on you!!!

We have lived on $18k NZ for the last 5 1/2 yrs while hubby has been at school..5 kids, blah blah, if you want budgetting advice...you know where I am (I can make a carrot go a LONG LONG way!)

Cant wait till you all get here....picnics a plenty, skiing, camping (to an extent...holiday home at charteris bay type of camping) BBQ's , helen babysitting...cos she doesnt have any and needs time with some!

You are too kind...it was easy! I had my eyes shut most of the time..ha ha!

3 boys at school and 2 wee girls at home...yay for the computer is all I can say. It is wonderful being able to share stuff, that the hubby thinks is trivial...he has a degree you know...blah blah....if my life experience here in nz helps others, then I am more than willing to bore you all to tears!

(hence the company..4greenhouses, if you need things booked/picked up...sim card, food, P O box, or a pick up from the airport...I am your chick! Very cheap rates...covers petrol really...but keeps the tax man happy)

Dont worry about bringing anything...UNLESS!!! you can bring something small that I can put on my wall....from my exotic mexican friend sesame. I have a blank wall where my computer is and that would be awesome....but no pressure, and if you 'forget' that is fine too...you can still come to our dessert night...of which I have had another thought so will start a new thread.....

NEW mexican, kiwi! close enough ! a wall piece it is - how about a stuffed rattlesnake? Laughing and no, i don't 'forget' - i'm not like that...
the dessert parties sound great - although i don't eat sugar ...haven't for 12 years ...but i do eat fruit sweetened pastries/desserts and agave (cactus syrup) sweetened desserts .... and so on ...... Razz
i find pastries made without refined sugar can taste even dreamier....would love to share some of my recipes with you all.

I have sent a message, but it is under the 'where to live' no idea how it got under that one...but I am sure you will see it if you click on 'view posts you havent read"

You can bring a sugar free dessert (sugar is the pits for you anyway..)...and Karl can run and jump in the river if he hears buzzing (there is one about 2 mins walk from the park)

it is going to be awesome to all meet up..and sesame I look forward to a new mexican (didnt realise they were different..sorry thought mexico was mexico new/old...trying to leave it!!!) hanging thing.....you are still my exotic friend though Wink

Hi again,

We're looking to visit Vara's sometime - what would you say was a good time of year to visit? Bearing in mind that we arrive in Sept... does it ever get "packed"?

Advice welcomed... thanks!

I'm not sure about that - we stayed in a house that was quite seperate to the other buildings and it only had 4 rooms and was nice and peaceful, so felt quiet and calm all the time any way. i think the main building for backpackers was pretty chockablock, but the folk we met from there seemed ever so friendly. Nice One

I think because of it's weather etc. it is an all year round place ... why not just ask Vara's themselves - they are pretty helpful. Clapping

Last word - for those of you going to Rarotonga (Raro), they move on Raro time - in other words nice and slowly and calmly - no rushing about. So be patient and get into the swing of it and you'll be fine ... it's like Jamaica ... so laid back it's horizontal. But once you have sat in an internet cafe in a hut on the beach you will consider that you have reached some kind of nirvana in your life ... heavenly. Yes

Kiwi - you have given me hope Laughing that I can last on 36,000nz$ for my 6mths !!

We are downsizing this as we don't want to live an "english pound" lifestyle as this may be deceiving so we are taking less - has anyone had experience of this - ie arriving relatively well off on UK£'s only to find its run out and life is different on NZ$?

Hi Moorf et all.
Somebody posted this link on the fishing forum in relation to seacucumbers, but it could be of interest to anyone really. It is the site of The Secretariat of the Pacific Community.
