fingers crossed Please can anybody point me to where I can find out pay scales for teachers (primary). I have looked at many education websites, but this info is never quoted.
Wanting to know how far the money would stretch in NZ.
Thanks

Hi Cathy,

Follow these links...I think this will get you there.

Use the Ministry of Education website: www.minedu.govt.nz
Click on Schools (LH column)
Then click on School Management and Admin (RH side)
Then click Collective Agreements (under Employment Conditions)
Then you want the top RH option (Primary Teachers.....)

This tells you all you need to know about state teachers' contracts, including renumeration.
Be warned...NZ has lots of teacher categories, depending on the level of qualifications, and their pay tables are complicated.
But the bottom line is that qualified primary teachers get up to NZD 54000. Most teachers take 9/10 years to get there. Private schools usually give a percentage above this scale.

Re. teaching in NZ....
Finding a job is harder, and primary teachers are no longer on the POL so a school will probably need to do a labour check. Judging by a few recent articles on www.stuff.co.nz, there would be LOTS of local competition.
The school population bulge is now leaving primary schools and entering the secondary sector (which is my teaching area), so the demand for overseas teachers is much reduced. I think Auckland is the only area where primary rolls are still growing.
There are a number of agencies which can help find positions; these have links on www.teachnz.govt.nz. It might be worth 'phoning these up to check out how the land lies.

Hope this helps,

Graham

Thanks for the quick response Graham.
I see what you mean about the complicated pay structure!
One immediate question after an initial look through, do teachers get paid at a different rate during school holidays or are such statements intended for absence during school term time ?
I shall take a look at the other two sites now and hope it doesn't spell gloom !
Regards,
Cathy
